We had a great time here with absolutely warm and nice people. After a very good local lunch we were shown some sensational places and told the history of them. Then we could visit the farm with all the animals and they got a lot of information about the animals. Our nine-year-old daughter was able to feed and pet the animals. Afterwards we took a horse-drawn carriage to an old farmhouse, where we were shown how life was many years ago and where we could bake bread and taste local specialties. We had a really great time with lots of information and lovely people. We can only recommend you not to miss this opportunity here!

Great Fun! No experience riding a horse before, but they managed to find a very calm horse for me (flash).
Although the ending was a bit different (not their fault) they did everything they could to make it a great trip and they succeeded, thanks so much!

We were expecting to have a 2.5h tour on a horseback and got so much more.
It was the best experience of a tour we ever got. The Guides are very friendly. You can join the tour also to gain your first experiences with horses and they even have a wagon, in case you would prefer to not ride a horse yourself, but still want to enjoy the tour. Summing up the experience in sum buzz words:
-friendly and personal
- inside information of the island history and little stories and myths
- local food served at the end
- milking a cow by yourself
- visiting their farm, several different animals
- see some great spots on the tour
- experiencing the island from a different view

We felt very relaxed after the tour and where overwhelmed by the hospitality. One of the best ways to spend your money, as you really get a lot for it.

This tour was everything we wanted and more! From the start to end (we had a little bit of trouble finding the meeting spot) Joao and Saloman went above and beyond to ensure we had fun, felt safe/comfortable, and were enjoying the experience.
The horses are so sweet and calm, and you really get to experience the Azores through the lens of a local!!
I can't thank Quinta das Raiadas enough for being so wonderful- their patience, knowledge, and love of what they do really sets them apart. I will be back to the Azores, and will be sure to come back and do this experience again!

My boyfriend and I wrapped up our trip with horseback riding and unexpectedly received the best history tour we have ever experienced. I grew up with Portuguese parents, rich in our culture, but never had a true understanding of how special this Island really is. The passion Joao has for this tour and the Island was heart-warming. He took his time and was incredibly knowledgeable. We went back in time and saw how my ancestors lived. What a great way to connect with the Island and the Azorian people.

It’s been a couple months since our trip and we still can’t stop telling people about our tour. Can’t thank you enough for the lifelong memories you gave us. It will now be our tradition to book a tour with you every time we come back!

This ride/tour was wonderful and the best thing I did on São Miguel! Quinta das Raiadas exceeded my expectations entirely—I thought I was signing up for a 3 hour horseback ride but it was actually a very thoughtful, detailed tour that included an exploration of farming practices in the Azores. My guide João Carvalho did an amazing job of showing me how sustainability is a way of life on the island. He is super knowledgeable and multilingual, and basically gave me a fascinating history lesson along with many local legends.

We visited beautiful views, a natural spring in the forest, the farm itself where we milked a cow and fed the sheep, and a village house where they had prepared a lovely array of Azorean refreshments!

A few tips for future visitors: Email is inconsistent and calling may not be the best way to book a tour unless you speak Portuguese. I arranged a tour with Salomão, but our communication was a little difficult due to my bad Portuguese! If you are anglophone (or other) the best way to confirm any important details is perhaps to have your hotel concierge or AirBnB host call a few days in advance. I did this and it worked out fine :)

Also, the tour works for both riders and non-riders, of all levels of experience! The guide typically brings a small horse-drawn carriage that can accommodate non-riders (I wish I’d known this so that my sister could have joined me—next time!). I am an experienced rider and told them when I booked so that I wouldn’t be stuck walk/trotting the whole time. João took the cue, and we galloped all over—so much fun!! My beautiful Lusitano horse, Flecha (“Arrow”) was sweet as sugar, easy and fast!

Overall the tour was a beautiful introduction to the Azorean way of life. It’s clear that they care deeply about the welfare of the animals, the island, and the environment, and are proud to share their work with visitors. I cannot praise them enough, and will certainly be back for another adventure :)

We had reserved a half-day horseback ride for our family of 5 well over half a year in advance, and reconfirmed a few days before arrival. We had indicated that we were interested in a several-hour horseback ride, and were quoted a price that included several other activities. We had understood, however, that as the name indicates, the main activity would be horseback riding.

After a 35-min drive to Ginetes from where we were staying on the island, we arrived exactly on time (9:30 am) at the pre-determined meeting spot on the pre-arranged day, to find no one waiting for us... After waiting for ~10 min, I called the number I had from our previous email correspondence (luckily I had a cellular plan that allowed me to make phone calls, otherwise I have no idea what we would have done!), and reached a surprised Salomão, who said he was expecting us in the afternoon. I could barely understand what he was saying (his English was next to nonexistent), but we somehow agreed to meet next to the church (which was right next to the original meeting point) in 10 min. He arrived ~15 min later (it was almost 10 am by that time), and after trying to understand what he was saying (and using a lot of hand signals), we understood that he was asking that we come back at 14:30 for the tour! As this was our last day on the island and the place was more than half an hour away from where we were staying, this was of course out of the question. Moreover, to our great surprise, we found out that what he intended for us was not a horseback ride, but rather a horse-pulled carriage ride! Definitely not what we had signed up for! We thanked him and parted ways, having wasted nearly half of our last day on the island. Very unprofessional!

We met Salomao in the village of Ginetes (the google map location was right!) and jumped on two horses for a ride to their farm (+milk their cow Maria / see the other animals) and their house to try some Azorean food and drink. I hadn't actually realized when we signed up that we would get to do this and it made for an awesome experience.

Salomao was a great host and this was definitely a highlight of our trip.

My sister and I met with the guide in the town of Ginetes. We were the only two in the tour, and we rode horses that knew to follow behind the guide’s horse-drawn carriage (which had a few seats in it if anyone would rather sit than ride). We signed up for a two hour, and it turned out to be a little longer but it was amazing! I am an experienced rider and my sister is not but the trail is suitable for any level of experience. We trotted a few times and that was the fastest we went. When we got to certain lookout points, we got off the horses to take in the breathtaking views for as long as we wanted to. At the end of the tour we were offered jams, fresh cheese, some toasties, sweets, and a bit of liqueur to try, and then we rode back to the start point and parted ways. It is extremely well worth it to go do. Also, afterwards we ate really good pizza at the Italian place just up the street from the meeting place, so that was the cherry on top. The guide was so friendly and we had a wonderful time!
