We did the long hike from the sign that says Trilho Turistico in Santa Barbara. It was long and challenging especially because we were only in flip flop sandals. I recommend wearing proper hiking footwear or at least sneakers. The forest canopy as you ascend it beautiful. We went in December and were the only ones on the trail. As we neared the summit the tree line disappeared and became mostly hearty scrub. The trail is extremely steep for the last 280 meters of elevation. The wind howled and the clouds blew up and over the mountain in chilling temperatures but it was thrilling to brave the elements not knowing exactly what our destination was since we took the detour on a lark; like much of or visit to Terceira. The view was obscured by fog and visibility was less than even 50’ at times because we couldn’t even see the lake from the summit on the day we hiked. It took much longer than we planned and fortunately we met another tourist on our descent who drove us back to our car. I highly recommend this on you visit but plan accordingly if you wish to get the full adventure by hiking the whole trail. Proper footwear, proper jacket if it’s foggy and set aside 3-4 hours for the round trip. Fortunately for us, it was a grand adventure regardless of the obscured view and we made new friends on the ride to our car and again at dinner that evening on our way back to our hotel.

We stopped by this Center on a rainy morning and were in for a magnificent surprise. Filipe Costa, the interpretation guide, spent 2 1/4 hours with us, he was so knowledgeable about everything, geology, botany and even history. It helped that no one else was there, but I never would have thought that 2 1/4 hours had gone by. Later in our stay we went to the Museum in Angra and information there was so much more meaningful and Filipe's talk.

In my opinion it is the best viewpoint since you can see almost the entire island and it is also the highest point and you can also see a crater.
Keep in mind that the weather here changes in seconds and that this viewpoint is almost always covered with fog.

Very narrow and not so well preserved roads, with some quite narrow curves. The view from the top, in the end, is rewarding - if you are lucky not to get fog...

It is very easy to reach the top despite the great altitude (a bit more than 1000 m). Views are amazing. Beware of the fog and so please go in a sunny day and a oye early or late in the day

From this high point you can see why the island is referred to as the patchwork island. The volcanic rocks have been placed as to make smaller grazing fields for the cows. They all have 2 open ends where the farmers put up temporary gates. This way the cows can be moved from one pasture to another with relative ease.

coming from Praia da Vitoria and using a "tourist map", we were worried that we had somehow overlooked the entrance to the viewpoint ... so we took the first road that read "Serra de Santa Barbara", which was a mistake. It is a dirt/gravel road that apparently leads to the Interpretation Center (which sits back a bit from the dirt road, so we thought it was a private residence). The road up to the viewpoint is the next right in an open, sunny spot and paved all of the way up. Most of the winding road is in the forest but as it nears the top, it emerges into the clear. It is not too hairy driving up, but on the way down, it can be a bit intimidating so focus on the road; however, there are no steep dropoffs if you respect the speed limit and other motorists behind, in front and oncoming.

At the top, there are beautiful views all around. I understand that the weather can be quite variable up there - we happened to have a clear, windy day; the next day, it was misty and humid throughout the island; the third day, clear again. The weather can also change throughout the day.

Had a good time to the top, but very windy and in the clouds so the long distance sights were not there. We stopped at the interpretive center and it's well worth the time spent along with the few euros for the explanation of the natural island history. While twisty the road is good.
