Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This was one of the sights on our walk from Cascais to the Boca da Inferno (Mouth of Hell). It caught our eye because it had a fairy-tale quality, with soft peachy colours, turrets and horsehoe arches. It is sitting, poised on a clifftop, overlooking secluded beach. Behind it you can see the blue and white striped Santa Marta lighthouse. It’s all very picturesque and makes a lovely photo.
It was built by 1903 the Irish/Portugese aristocrat and tobacco tycoon, Jorge O’Neill as an extravagant wedding present for his daughter. Although maybe he was just hoping to keep a close eye on her as he already had his own house, Palacio dos Condes de Castro Guimaraes across the road (it's the one with that looks like a castle). One wonders if that might have been a bit too close for comfort?
Both the properties are now museums. Entry here is €5 and is a combined ticket that includes entry to the lighthouse also. However if you are keen on visiting, check up on the opening times because it was not open when we were there and the hours seemed quite limited.

The Casa de Santa Maria was built in 1903 for an Irish aristocrat George O’Neil, who had made a fortune from selling tobacco. Although stripped of a lot of the original furnishings the ceilings and Portuguese tiles rescued from a ruined chaple near Lisbon are worth seeing. There is a small entrance fee which includes the lighthouse next door, but most hotels in the town will provide free couchers to the historical sites if you are staying in CasCais.
The Casa is shut on a Monday and public holidays and normal opening hours are from 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00 from Tuesday through to Sunday.
Even if you don’t intend to go inside its just as impressive from the outside and is worth the walk up from the Marina to catch a photo of the Casa de Santa Maria from the bridge over the small inlet.

Insight into the world of the 19th century aristocrat Jorge O'neil, who commissioned the Casa de Santa Marta as a wedding present to his daughter.

Beautiful tiled walls and art. Gardens were a bit sparse but could have been because it was still early Spring. Best part is that it's free to senior citizens.

We visited the Lighthouse Museum next door and entry to this museum was included in the price. As I explored the house I was very interested in many of the interesting rooms and design features of the house, I was unsure of exactly why it was a museum? On the way out I discovered there was a nice English brochure explaining everything. It would have been nice if this was offered to us upon entry. The house is very interesting from an architectural standpoint and it has great design features. It is also in a lovely location. Definitely worth a visit!

This is probably the most photographed house in Cascais. Next to a small cove and the lighthouse. Several super examples of tilework adorn the halls. Magnificent large hall on the first floor.

We visited on our last day in Cascais and were pleased that we did not miss this charming little house. Although dating from the early twentieth century, it is decorated with tiles from the sixteenth century onwards. It is beautifully situated overlooking the sea. Unfortunately the weather was so poor we did not venture into what looked like a delightful small garden. Very reasonably priced ticket that also covers the nearby lighthouse museum.

If you like architecture and portugese tiles, this house is a must. I had the good luck to get a free private tour by a very well informed and enthusiastic guide who leads visitors around the house during the summer.

Easy to find; right on the walking path along the Cascais coast, for 3 Euros you can view an early 19th century house designed by Raul Lino. Not overly furnished but a walk through the main, upper and basement floors are interesting. House remains cool even in hot weather. Washrooms on site. Small gardens. Pictures allowed.
