Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Wasn't sure what to expect but had a great experience here. Fabulous and incredibly interesting displays and "hands on " activities. My husband and I spent a lot more time here than we expected to - such an original place. The building inside and out is very beautiful - in fact the whole square it is situated in and the area round about has some incredible architecture. Well worth a wander round.
Would definitely recommend - a great place to visit and for free ( donation welcome).

This was a wonderful, free museum in the heart of Lisbon by the Praça do Comércio. Their displays are informative, fun, and interactive. You're handed a ticket on the way in and you can use it throughout the museum to learn different things in an enjoyable and engaging way. I've actually been to other money museums in London and Edinburgh but I think this was my favorite.

The musuem was quite interesting, the most interactive exhbit was devoted to Lisbons banking system, so no really very interesting to most tourists.
I found the most fascinating exhibit to be the collection of bill from around the world.
images of a young queen Elizabeth and before Korea changed the won system were among the many items on display

FREE on Wednesdays. Perfect way to spend an hour or so. We did it on our last day as we needed a few things before we headed home and we noticed that it was free on certain days. I am so glad we visited it. It is full of some money interesting things. If you like money, you'll find it interesting. It covers the history of money from all over the world.

The Money Museum was opened to the public in April 2016.
This building was the former church of S. Julião in Lisbon’s Baixa district. This church was from the 1600s, and rebuilt in late Baroque style after the Great Earthquake of 1755,

Actually fascinating. Some top coins, notes, security guards, and money related trivia and info. If there were nothing else to do in Lisbon I'd do it every day. Very scary robot man who looks like he's following you though - beware. For FREE entry of charge.

We came in here to get some rest-bite from a heatwave ! But found it very interesting once we were inside. The building is beautiful and exhibits quite interesting. Never realised a gold bar weighed so much !
Also, its free and air-conditioned

The kids were looking forward to this museum. Not a museum that I would actually go to. I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoyed it. We got to hold a gold bar. The kids got to make their own bank notes and coins, amongst other activities. They have an amazing coin collection. The security guys on each floor were super helpful and were always giving us info or interacting with the kids. The amazing thing is it’s free.

My husband hates museums but he let me drag him here as it's built on the site of St-Julien church where one of my ancestors was baptized and I wanted to pay a visit. As I'm walking around taking pictures of the church (the bank bought the church and turned it into a museum) he started to look at exhibits and got completely engrossed. It's a really fascinating look into not only money, but the history behind it and how it influenced history. We only had an hour and it wasn't enough time if you really wanted to read everything.

It's free so that always catches my eye. Looks a bit small but we managed to spend a couple of hours here out of the midday sun.
Some interactive bits that I'm sure kids would love, we did too cos we're big kids!
Lots of old coins, how they make "paper" money. A gold bar you can hold.
Beautiful building, it was a church at one point.
