The area
Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!
How to get there
  • Restauradores • 1 min walk

The term "Restoration" has a conservative connotation and is associated with a rollback from the gains of the revolution. However, the 30-meter obelisk resembling a pencil has the opposite meaning. It was erected in 1886 in honor of the fighters for freedom and independence from Spain. The dates and places of the battles of the 28-year War for Independence1640-1668 are immortalized on the monument. Bronze sculptures on the pedestal represent Freedom and Victory. Victory can be distinguished from Freedom by the crown and palm leaves.

Monument to the Restorers is one of several monuments that are really lovely in Lisbon. This one, on Avenida da Liberdade, is beautiful and imposing. We walked down this wide road a couple of times during our stay in Lisbon, as our hotel was just further up from the monument. The monument commemorates the Portuguese victory in the Restoration War which marked the independence of Portugal from Spain , in the 17th century.

When we were in Lisbon we visited the Monument to the Discoveries and the Belem Tower. This is an interesting monument which details all the voyages of discovery made by the brave Porugese sailors. The Belem Tower used to be situated in the middle of the river but is now high and dry on the riverbank. Both of these attractions are well worth a visit.

The Monumento dos Restauradores is a monument that stands in tribute to the Portuguese Restoration War that ended Spanish Bourbon rule over Portugal, beginning the rise of the House of Braganza to the Portuguese throne.

The monument features a square stone platform with truncated vertices on which stands an obelisk as it's centrepiece. The square platform has two sculptures representing the allegorical figures of Independence and Victory.

One of the larger obelisks in Lisbon. Nice detail and worth a visit. Quite near the Hard Rock Cafe and the train station in downtown Lisbon.

This monument to the restoration of Portuguese independence in 1640 sits in a lovely square on Avenida da Linerdade. The monument comprises a large obelisk (Monumento dos Restauradores) with the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War. The tile / stone work on the square is notable, beautiful as well.

Restauradores Square makes a great first stop on a walking tour of Lisbon’s great boulevard – starting from Marquess of Pombal Square (traffic circle), and heading downhill to the south on the lovely main boulevard of Lisbon, Avenida da Linerdade (with its tree-lined divided street, with pedestrian walkways, lined with shops, cafes, monuments, and morning street market with vendor stalls along sides) to Rossio Square – one of the main squares of Lisbon. At Rossio, perhaps with a stop at A Ginjinha for fortification via a cherry liquor shot, before continuing along the Rua Augusta (Agusta Street, at the south end of Rossio Square) and following this lovely, shop & café lined avenue, with its beautiful patterned tilework, up to the grand Rua Augusta Arch. And, then finally, through the arch and onto Praça do Comércio, the historical waterfront entrance to Lisbon, and one of the largest squares in Europe. All in all, with stops for photos, allow two or three hours for the full walk – more if stopping for nosh or cafe.

Located in the center of Praca dos Restauradores surrounded by calçada portuguesa stands this almost 100-foot-tall monument to commemorate the independence of Portugal from Spanish rule in 1640.
It celebrates all the soldiers who died during the freedom struggle.
Affixed to the pedestal are two angels representing Victory and Independence. Victory is the female facing north and Independence is male facing south. The inscriptions on the monument denote key battles and events during the War of Restoration.
