Neighbourhood: Chiado & Carmo
The traditionally trendy "Chiado" (literally, "squeak", the nickname of a 16th century poet) offers plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars where you can stop for a cafe or cocktail, after exploring its streets, shops, art galleries, theaters, museums and viewpoints. It's also the home to the statue of the famous statue of portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, having is usual espresso at "A Brasileira" as he used to. You can also enjoy breathtaking views of Lisbon from the Elevador de Santa Justa or the Carmo Convent, for example. A commercial neighborhood at its core, especially for its Garrett and Carmo streets, Chiado is to this day a mandatory visit in Lisbon.

One of the monuments you can see at Largo Trindade Coelho in front of the Church of Sao Rogue is the fairly recently added statue of Jesuit Father Antonia Vieria (1608-1697). This is the work of sculptor Marco Fidalgo that was erected in 2017.

What you see is a bronze of an elderly Father Vieria standing in robe extending forward a cross with is left hand. Before him stands three native indigenous children, a representation of his life and missionary works in what was the Portuguese colony of Brazil. It is a monument for which sparks mixed feelings in the modern era, one more serious and emotionally charged than the casual and fun loving statue of O Cauteleiro statue nearby on the square.

The statue is near the Church of Sao Roque . This priest was a Jesuit who went to Brazil to spread Christianity. The statue depicts him with 3 native children.
I read when I researched what we want to see (and it was connected to the Church of Sao Roque) that some people have "difficult feelings" looking at the statue. I would say don't judge the history by nowadays views - history is past and this statue represents the past. And we should learn from past and change nowadays to be better and acknowledge what happened.

The "Statua di Padre António Vieira" portrays Father António Vieira (1608–1697), a Jesuit priest, diplomat and missionary, with three Brazilian native "Indian" children, whose conversion the famous preacher charged himself with. Even though Padre António Vieira is traditionally considered as a tolerant and enlightened man well ahead of his times, a prolific preacher and philosopher, nowadays, the statue may (and certainly does) provoke an uneasy feeling, for obvious reasons. However, as a historic monument it is quite interesting, especially when explored along with other attractions on Largo Trindade Coelho.

Jesuit priest, theologian, teacher, orator, diplomat and writer, Antonio Viera undoubtedly qualifies for the title of accomplished polymath.

At the age of six he moved with his parents to Brazil and received his formative education there.

As a young man he declared that he wanted to dedicate his life to the spread of Christianity in the colonies, and this he did.

Inherent in this he pleaded the cause of indigenous peoples.

Wednesday 9th October and we were sightseeing in Lisbon and we discovered this Statue which which was located in Largo de Trindade Coelho and nearby the Sao Roque Church and Museum.

The Statue commemorates Father António Viera, who was born in Lisbon in 1608 and died in 1697 in Bahia, Brazil.

During his life he was a Portuguese diplomat, orator, preacher, philosopher, writer, and member of the Royal Council to the King of Portugal. In 1635 he entered the priesthood.
