The Alfama is the history, this is the heart of Lisbon. Everything happens here. Seems once to walk under the arch you are transported. Shops everywhere, restaurants, coffee, Royal Palace used to be here before the 1755 earthquake. Huge statue of the King here.
This square is in walking distance from Rossio train station and is vibrant all day and night. You can catch the trams and hop on hop off boat from here.

Unfortunately the part of the surrounding buildings were under renovation but this does not harm the majesty of this beautiful waterfront square. It is really nice. Be sure to spend some time in a cafe and watch the whole scene.
Breathtaking seaside main square. You can take a look at a couple of interesting historic features. There are a few bars around it, if you wish to take a break. There are also several touristy shops along the road. Be careful of peddlers.
