Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Neoclassical style building located on the short northern side of the square known as Rossio. In the past, the Palace of the Inquisition stood here and when it was destroyed by fire in 1836, it was decided to replace it with the construction of this theatre, completed in 1846, designed by the Italian architect Fortunato Lodi.
The most aesthetically interesting part is the facade on which stands the portico with six Ionic columns (coming from the disappeared church of São Francisco) which support a triangular tympanum whose pediment is decorated with a bas-relief depicting Apollo with the Muses; the tympanum is surmounted by three statues, of which the central one represents Gil Vicente, known as the founder of Portuguese theatre; the bas-reliefs placed above the windows on the first floor contain the faces of Portuguese writers. The decoration that distinguished the interior was mostly lost in the fire of 1964, while during the reconstruction the original external appearance of the nineteenth-century building was preserved. Reopened to the public in 1978, it is still in business; however, during our visit (mid-December) it was surrounded by barriers which did not allow us to appreciate it to the fullest.

Located in Rossio or Dom Pedro IV Square we find this work of architecture that attracts attention for having Ionic style columns at its entrance. Finding out about the history of the site there is a figure of Gil Vicente who is considered the father of Portuguese theater and was founded by Almeida Garrett on the site where the Palacio dos Estaus had been, which had previously served the inquisition but was destroyed in a fire in In 1836, therefore, a more modern one was made in honor of Queen Maria II and inaugurated around 1846, the work of Fortunato Lodi, an Italian architect. In addition, it was also destroyed by fire around 1964 and reopened in 1978.

Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II is a beautiful building. It stands on a very historic site and in one of the most prestigious areas of the city, Rossio Square, or Praca Dom Pedro IV. The site used to be an old palace which was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and rebuilt. It then became the site for the National Theatre. The interior of the Theatre housed many artworks by important Portuguese artists. Unfortunately, however, history repeated itself in the form of yet another destructive fire in 1964! The Portuguese, though, were determined so they rebuilt the whole thing again and the Theatre started its work again in 1978. It is a wonderful building so try not to miss visiting it if you can.

We didn't go to the Theatre. But our Daughter needed a toilet in an emergency. In Rosario Square ( I think that's the name of the square ) there is a lack of public restrooms. So, I brought Her into the Theatre and asked if we could use their tiolet. They could not have been nicer or more obliging.
That gesture of kindness we really appreciate and I am writing this review to express my gratitude to them.

The tour lasted just over an hour with an English speaking guide. She was excellent and we saw the theatre from top to bottom (seamstresses room; small theatre; main auditorium; dressing room; foyer; and area for scene painting. We were a small group of eight. There are lifts for those, like me, who find stairs hard work. YOU NEED TO BOOK BEFOREHAND. The official advice is to book the previous Friday, but they kindly accepted us on the day. It is very cheap and very well worth doing.

This is a very grand and imposing building at one end of Rossio square. A beautiful building to look at with its columns and sculptures that adorn it's frontage

This is a wonderful building and a night time viewing is recommended. Sits on a busy square with fountains and a massive statute at the top of a column.

On the Rossario Square theri si the theater, where eralier the Inquisition Palace was standing. Imposant six columns with a big tympanon on the front side. The interior is very nice, and after the big fire in 1964, it is completely reconstructed.

Located right in the center of Lisbon, it is a beautiful beaulding. If you can get inside, try to appreciate the XIX style with big chandeliers and the throne balcony.
It is and interesting place but if your time in the city is limited, it is not a must-see.

Their website is in Portuguese. I can't understand the language. If I am there outside the building on 12 March, can I just buy a ticket to go inside and see what is playing or do I have to go on line and book only to avoid not getting tickets?
