The area
Neighbourhood: Baixa, Rossio & Restauradores
A pending candidate to become a World Heritage Site, Lisbon's downtown (the "Baixa Pombalina", or simply "Baixa") is a perfect example of anti-earthquake construction, having been rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake by the famous Marquês de Pombal (hence its name). Its offer is vast: restaurants and cafes in Rossio and Restauradores, outlets and shops in the Áurea, Augusta, Prata and other famous streets, the imponent Praça do Comércio and its Arch, the luxury shops along the Avenida da Liberdade, this is the beating heart of the city center. The Baixa also grants easy access to trains leading to Sintra, the trams that go around the Castle hill, old neighborhoods or even take you to Belém, and Lisbon's traditional restaurants and cafes. Considering a visit to the Fashion and Design Museum (free entrance) and don't forget to try the famous liquor, "ginjinha"!

Tram 28 and all the others - they make you smile ((c:
One of the truly amazing things in Lisbon are the charming tram lines that cross the city in all directions. It’s inexpensive transportation that makes you smile - whether you are inside looking out or outside looking in. In addition the trams are a great photo op, don’t you think…?

Tram 28 - cheap but underwhelming if you've already explored by foot
We decided to get on at the start of the route and go to the end - so a bit of a hike from our base to Cemiterio dos Prazeres then on to Martim Moniz by tram. The journey time was around 50 mins. We'd already seen much of the route as it happens so it wasn't particularly exciting. We'd toyed with the idea of doing it in reverse another day but that idea has been shelved - not much more to be gained from it. It's a pretty cheap way to see a bit of the city if you're not here for more than a few days but it gets very busy along the route - I would imagine it would be jammed in the summer.

    Old World charm
Since it was ‘off season’ the trams were not packed. Did 3 loops, Agree it is the best way to see the steep and narrow streets of Alfama. Amazing to observe how the trams, buses, cars, tuk tuks and man survive on the narrow streets. Hold on tight if you dont want spine jarring sudden stops

A Cheap and Wild Trip Through Lisbon
We had a card for transport in Lisbon and inspite of all the warnings of over crowding and being crushed by Portugese locals we got on at the central terminal and journeyed out to the other end of the line. There we were all orderd off and took the waiting tram back to town. There was some grumbling as we had to pay again to return but we had the magic ticket, so no worries. The return route is slightly different, due to the one way system but equally as interesting. On our second day of our magic ticket with a couple of hours left on it we repeated the run. Well worth it, I think it is €3 each way, very reasonable for an hour on a tram.

Worth a trip, but expect to queue.
We rode this during the day and then one evening. It was an adventure as we weren’t sure where it went. We had free trips after purchasing a 48hour hop on off ticket with the yellow tour. definitely would recommend but queues are long and you may end up standing!

Great way to see the city
We hopped on tram 28 at the 1st stop and rode throught the city. I recoomend this approach as the tram can get very crowded. Great low cost way to get an overview of area for futre exploration

    Famous Tram 28
We have twin toddlers and I couldn't imagine trying to A.) wait in line to get on and B.) somehow hauling our stroller around on the tram. So we wandered around, seeing attractions that were close to the tram's line. At one intersection, as we waited to cross, the tram came up and stopped so we got a quick picture with it that way and called it good. If you're looking to see it but don't want to be smooshed with a bunch of strangers, I would suggest just trying this!

    Unique but crowded
I was tired of climbing up the hills in Lisbon and the tram came around the corner right as I was passing the stop so I jumped on. The locals use these as much as the tourists so it is crowded beyond all belief. If you do not like being jostled this is not the mode of transportation for you. Due to the steep incline of the city and the way the trams work, there's a lot of starting and stopping so if you do not have a seat you will need to brace yourself for impact. That said it is a cute unique and historic way to take in parts of the city and get around. I've heard that this tram is known for pickpocketing and there are quite a few signs that warn you about it in Lisbon. I didn't have any issues but I was also very aware of the reputation and did my utmost to ensure my belongings were secure.

    Packed and long long lines
The train is great for a photo op. It’s a charming fixture of Lisbon. We waited in line for over an hour for the tram. Once we got to the front we saw a number of trams stop ( the red ones too) the drivers got out and a man walked up to the line and said, “we are on strike.” No it wasn’t a joke, the wait was for nothing. We didn’t get to take the tram. We saw that they resumed later in the day. We didn’t bother getting in line as we weren’t going to waste more of our day. We did speak to many people who took the tram and all said that it was a great way to see the city, but everyone also said it was completely packed as well. Wouldn’t take this experience away from anyone, just be ready to wait in line and be in a packed tram car.

You board a Martim Moniz Plaza (be prepared for a line), and then the Tram climbs up Mouraria and Alfama, then back down through Baixa Chiado and on to Chiado, Barrio Alto, and Estrella. You see a lot of the city along the way. If you board along the route, you may have to stand in a crowded tram, and you should watch for picpockets. Lots of locals use the Tram to get around. Great tourist ride, great public transit.

We had heard good things about Tram 28 but were sorely disappointed with the whole experience.
We joined the very long queue and waited for over an hour to be herded onto the already packed tram. The driver made my friend and I move from our seat for a local to sit down when she had already declined the offer of another seat.
It was a bumpy journey trying to hang on to the hand straps and not fall into anyone as the driver had so many passengers on board.
After 10 mins we wanted to get off and the driver wouldn’t open the rear door to let us out. If you are of a nervous disposition, please don’t ride this tram!

20/6/23 - Tuesday evening

This is public transport! It is not a Tour or round trip (unless you pay the return!). The locals get on as usual if they can fit in and suffer the tourists! It is cheap if you get the 50c card and by the €1.65 tickets for a single ticket of whatever length of journey.

We three middle aged guys were on our last day in Lisbon with our French host who lives on the tram 28 route itself.

We had already bought the Tram28 fridge magnet and had wanted to take the trip when time allowed. We had finished the tour of the fantastic botanical garden and our host suggested we walk to the terminus to get Better chance of a seat on it.

We walked the 25 minutes up and down via the metro station to buy the rechargeable ticket card and single fare each (50c & €1.65 respectively) for the tram.

Our host and guide lives in Lisbon so we left it to him to sort out the journey but he was not a 'tourist' and got confused about the stops. We walked to the Estrela Basilica where he thought it started only to find every 28 train Jan packed at 17:50. We ended up walking 25 minutes uphill up the 28 route all the way to the far terminus at Jardim de Parade Prazeres to get the tram back.

The notoriety of the tram has encouraged an entrepreneur to set up a cafe by the stop (or maybe it has always been there) that does a roaring trade for those in the queues willing to part with their money (or those who need to relax after a bumpy standing only ride!).

Luckily the queue was not that long and we got on at 18:21 easily and each had a seat.

The ride itself was rough as one would expect but entertaining as the locals mingled with the tourists. As a tourist you dare not give up your seat for a little old lady as you will be standing the rest of the way! Most locals took short journeys anyway hopping on and off.

Blink and you miss some of the ' sights' on the way! I had already walked some of them the day before, nothing spectacular from the bus peaking between fellow passengers off the sight was in the other side. There is certainly no commentary and you can follow the route on your smartphone map app.

The highlights were actually in the mundane! Driving through the Alfalma squeezing down single track roads with shops half a metre from the windows each side - breathe In! The steep hill climbs were also quite entertaining and noisy!

Luckily after the main 'sights' the tram actually stopped 20m from our host's flat on a main road on a hill! We were 'home' by 19:00! The value of the tram was good as a result although we had to walk over an hour (uphill at times) to get to it in the first place!!

Having read the reviews, I went on Tram 28 early, around 7am. It was pretty quiet and I could get a seat even though I didn’t get on at the first stop. For those who don’t want an early start, Tram 12 is a great alternative to see Alfama on the old fashioned trams

We decided on reviews we had to do this trip however honestly don't know what the hype was about !
Firstly we had to queue for 90 minutes to get on a tram at the start point. Then although there are parts of the journey that are quite pretty and it's meant to be a round trip ,you have to get off at the terminus and queue again to get a different tram back! More that that though they pack the trams to bursting which made it very uncomfortable. Would I recommend? Honestly? No! It's just really not worth the time and effort!

Not a massive fan of this. Waited 1 and half hours for the tram. Queue was massive. Round to the first stop and took on lots more local passengers and then more local passengers. It was packed.
We stayed on till the end of the tram ride and decided we would walk back! DO NOT DO THAT. just get back on the next tram and go back.
Not something I would do again.

We arrived off a cruise ship early at 7:00 AM and none of the attractions open until 9:30 or 10:00. We first went to the Metro station and got the viva viagem day pass card for 7.10€ each, then took the metro to Martim Moniz station, exit to the left and the Tram stop is half way down the plaza across the street to the left. There is a covered bus stop at most stops.
There are many #28 trams running at the same time, dozens of them, so don’t worry about missing one or if they’re full, another empty one will be along in a few minutes. We got on the third one and had a window seat.
This tram goes by the St Jorge Castelo and passes through all of the neighborhoods saving you a lot of hiking uphill. We got on and off several times and it was a great way to quickly explore the city.

You might have to wait a while but it's worth it! It's a wild ride through the streets of Lisbon. Sit by a window but don't stick your head out as it goes so close to buildings, you will lose your head. A fun ride!
