Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We went there for Shabbat and it was so nice. The rabbi made announcements at services in English, Hebrew and Porgutuese. We had Shabbat dinner at this outdoor enclosed area next to the synagogue. The food was great and the people were all very friendly. They even sang a song in Ladino. For those planning to visit, you must send in your passport info in advance for security, and if you want to reserve Shabbat dinner, you have to pay with a bank transfer, and if that doesn't work, there is a place called the KosherIn where you can pay in person in cash.

We shall be in Lisbon Shabbat 23 November. What time are your services on Friday 22 November and Shabbat 23 November. Do you have Kosher meals on Friday and/or Shabbat ? How do we arrange to come ?

The Lisbon synagogue was inaugurated in 1904. It was the first synagogue to be built in Portugal since the late 15th century. Ventura Terra conceived a temple in a style mixing Neo-Byzantine and Neo-Romanesque, consistent with the Oriental fashion for Synagogue architecture.
It's a lovely synagogue and it's the center of the Portuguese Jewish community.
Also Belmonte, Porto and Tomar synagogues are worth visiting!!

I very rarely come to TripAdvisor to write a negative review, but my experience at the Lisbon Synagogue forces me to do so. In 8 days of traveling in Portugal, the ONLY rude person I came into contact with was Allan, the gentleman who leads "tours" of this synagogue.

I arranged my appointment weeks in advance as instructed by their website. My time was for 11:30 and when I arrived Allan yelled at me for being late as my appointment was supposedly at 11 (despite email evidence to the contrary).

He rudely demanded 5 Euros from me as I stood there in shock at how unprofessional and unwelcoming he was. When I asked if we could still do the tour, he said, "Do you want to see the synagogue or not?!?" He was slightly rude in our email correspondence leading up to the visit, but nothing prepared me for how awful he was in person.

I've traveled to 51 countries and seen synagogues all over the world - I've never had an experience like this. Also, to be quite honest the synagogue's interior isn't much to see any way.

If you're looking for a beautiful synagogue along with an incredibly inviting reception and informative tour - please go to Porto and visit the synagogue there!

This is a very beautiful and unique synagogue, really worthy of a visit!
The synagogue is closed to public visits unless you book an appointment in advance - call the phone number indicated on the synagogue website or contact the synagogue administration by e-mail to schedule a visit.
Another way is just to go there on Friday evening or on Saturday morning for the Shabbat prayers - it's the best way to visit this beautiful synagogue.
The synagogue is within walking distance from the metro (Rato station - yellow line) and it's within walking distance from Marques de Pombal square.
I also recommend to visit Porto's synagogue!

Before leaving for a trip that would end with several days in Lisbon, I contacted the Synagogue to ask if we could visit there while in Lisbon. This began a correspondence with a woman named Ana. We made an appointment to visit and hailed a cab and arrived at a locked gate. After a short while a gentleman opened the gate and we walked into the courtyard that housed the Synagogue. Finally, I got to meet Ana. What a treat that was. It was if we had always known each other. She showed us the inside of the shul and invited us to sit as she told us about the history of both the synagogue and the Jews in Portugal. The synagogue is beautiful. Not to be missed. It was built in 1921 and was the first to be built since the 15th century when the Jews were expelled from Portugal. There are 600 members, but a small group that are actually active. The highlight of the day was Ana. She is the most lovely person and although we live in different worlds...our worlds ideas and views are so much the same. When we got home I sent her a thank you...she responded by sending me a youtube of Itzak Perelman and Neil Sedaka..among others...doing a rendition of "Yiddishe Mamah", telling me that we were both Yiddishe Mamahs. If you have any interest in Jewish history don't miss this unique experience. You will be inspired.

Sadly, the entrance is secured because of the unending prejudice against Jews in Portugal. However, the majesty and preservation of this holy place is remarkable and teaches many lessons about keeping the faith alive, protecting holy relics, and the sustenance of charity. Visit, make a donation and validate the courage of the Jewish people!

We contacted the synagogue by email months before to request a visit. Prompt response and addressed the dates that we were available. Visit confirmed! Send a reminder out two weeks before. Bring 20 euro at least for a donation. Lovely sanctuary and a short talk from a member of the congregation. Take pics. Guys need to cover their head so bring a hat and your passport please. Rato subway stop. The address is Rua Alexandre Herculano 59. Ring the bell outside Lisboa Shaare Tikvah Synagogue. 30 minutes from start to finish. Shalom.
