- emmachambers2016Sittingbourne, United Kingdom83 contributionsScary cable car but worth the tripScary cable car well worth the trip down to a garden/farm with restaurant and beach. Not for the feint hearted but good fun overall. Lovely meal in the restaurant with local wine and Madeira available (and partaken).Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- richard2112Penrith, United Kingdom191 contributionsGreat views and locationWell worth a visit but beware the secret of this gem is now very much out. Priced similarly to the main cable car in Funchal. The excellent restaurant at the bottom can be very busy, particularly if there is a coach tour in. Still worth the effort for the views. We were fortunate a few years ago to have arrived when the cable car was closed for maintenance...and had the opportunity to ride in the vertical farmers lift - now that was a little scary !Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- Joan BEssex, United Kingdom33 contributionsVisit this truly beautiful place....Absolutely love this place "discovered" it in September, and could not wait to return. which I just have and it still felt so special. It is possible to stay overnight which I am planning to do in June when back in Madeira. Please arrange a trip there, you will not regret it,,,,just magical.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 January 2024
- Gardengel-IoWWest Sussex, United Kingdom1,014 contributionsGo for the foodNot far west of Funchal. Free parking mainly on the approach road to the cable car and a small area by turning circle, but not much of it. It was a relatively quite February day when we were here, so I can only imagine what it might be like in the height of the season. Cable car was 12 euro each return, very steep. You then walk through the fruit area. Don’t get too excited about this, it is a glorified allotment except when you think of from whence you came to get here. It is quite a walk from the cable car to the restaurant so be prepared if walking is an issue. I think there is access to a lift in a golf cart but I cant say for sure. Certainly an interesting and unique spot for lunch or just a drink and snack/ice cream. Good menu- again think where you are, some interesting combinations. We arrived about 1 without a reservation and it was fine. It did get busier but still plenty of room. Again in high season booking may be necessary and do allow time for the ride and the walk and possibly a long walk from where you manage to park your car, taxi may be an option. The fruit plate was a little disappointing considering the whole point of the place, with only 3 fruits, banana, avocado and melon. The banana with cheese and honey was a new one and a good combination. A stronger, or more, cheese would have made it even better though. The Espada/Scabbard fish with banana was very good The beach is not very pretty nor sandy but a spot to while away the time. Lizards a plenty among the plants and stone and crabs on the rocks along the short concrete pier.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 March 2024
- missmillyMiddlesbrough, United Kingdom920 contributionsAmazing viewsAmazing views and lovely location. We made our own way here by taxi and took the very steep cable car ride down to the pebbled beach. Lovely walk though the farm grounds to get to the restaurant. The food was ok, bit expensive, but given nothing else in the area its not too bad. There are some sun-beds for rent and steps into the sea. Cable car was quick and the views outstanding both up and down the cliff.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2024

I booked a table at this restaurant as I had heard good reviews about it. I was terribly disappointed with both the food and the service which was diabolical. After waiting for 30 minutes and being totally ignored, whilst people around me were getting service, I went up and asked if I could get some service! Without any apology I was given the menu. When my food arrived, I had to request olive oil, salt etc which should have automatically been put on the table and yet it took a further five minutes to arrive and when I asked for a second glass of wine half way through my meal, it didn't arrive until I had finished the food, ten minutes later. The food was not any better than other places on the island, but more expensive and the fish portion size was too small for the price charged, although the Mango sauce was good. When you add in the ten euro cost of getting there, it ended up being a big expensive let down. They need to either improve their waiting staff, or get a big sign telling people to order food and drinks at the bar. I will not be going back there!

This place is known to me, but this time the visit was limited to the pier and restaurant.
Visiting the land was not allowed - covid reasons - but if you pay €7,5 per person they give you a guided tour. In my dictionary this is called robbery. The Tourist board will hear about this. The covid reasons was notoriously “bullsh***”
The pier and bar was packed with people.
Not to repeat.

We have visited here before, and thoroughly enjoyed the cable car trip to the location, and admiring the bountiful gardens. So far so good for our trip here in October. We had planned to enjoy some peaceful time on the beach before eating lunch in the beach front restaurant. There were several people at the resort, enjoying the good weather. We paid to hire loungers which were located on the jetty. Unfortunately we were located next to a group of brash, loud Canadians who continually played music at full volume, and loudly shared stories punctuated with bad language to embarrassed visitors. A sign clearly stated music was not allowed, so it is disappointing that staff did not enforce this. Several other visitors appeared uncomfortable. We cut short our visit, disappointed that we did not experience the tranquil visit that we had expected. We will not return.

My husband and I did the organic farm tour and fruit tasting with our guide, Fatima. This is an excellent tour and we would highly recommend it!! Fatima knew all kinds of interesting information about the farm and eagerly answered all of our questions. She was very fluent in English so we could easily understand everything she said. Fatima was very good at narrowing in on the topics that she could tell we were interested in. The fruit tasting was much better than we expected. There were all kinds of fruits to try and she also gave us information about each one as we tried it. Afterwards we ate at the restaurant at Faja dos Padres and it was probably one of the best meals we had the whole time we were on the island. This tour is very worth it!!!!!!

Well worth a visit for the novelty factor. We visited on a recommendation from friends who stayed here early 2020. Okay you have to pay €10 each to do down in the gondola but at the bottom you really are away from the crowds. We went down for lunch. The portions are large and it was lovely to sit next to the pebble beach and eat whilst listening the waves. Like all places on the island the adherence to CV19 regulations was excellent. It has an interesting history. Go on a nice day for superb views as you go down/up the gondola.

We intended on visiting this beach with our children but for €50 to use the cable car we didn’t feel it was worth it. €10 per person. It looks stunning but all of the beaches in Madeira look equally as beautiful and cosy nothing

We had the tour with fruit tasting with Fatima and it was amazing, I would call it the highlight of our Madeira holiday. Fatima told us a lot about the history of the island and of the farm, we learned much more from her than from all our tourist brochures. The tour was both very informative and also relaxed, you could feel yourself immersed in the sheer beauty of everything around. It is a magic place and I cannot recommend it highly enough for all that it offers. The fruit tasting at the end was also great, we tasted fruit that we did not know it even exist, everything fresh and delicious.
After the fruit tasting we had lunch and we chose some dishes prepared with vegetables and fruit from their garden, the food was very tasty and the service very friendly and fast. Of course, we also enjoyed the beach in front of the restaurant, the water was crystal clear, calm and warmer than on other beaches we visited on the island.

Not being great on heights, this was an interesting place to visit. Cable car down to sea level was scenic for what I dared look at. Hidden gem of a way of life making the most of what a narrow strip of land can offer. The restaurant produces superb local food, great wine and nice walks around the agricultural area.

Great experience just descending the cliff in an almost perpendicular cable car!
We walked past the kitchen garden and through the banana plantation to reach the restaurant ( about 15 mins but that included stopping to look at the vegetation! )
Sat in the covered bit of the restaurant while the surf crashed on the beach nearby.
Octopus and Dorado were cooked to perfection and came with sweet potato, baked potato and salad, mostly from the restaurants own garden.
The journey back up was even more interesting as the wind had got up a bit and the gondola swung about a bit.
If the wind reaches 25 knots they stop running!
Very glad we finally managed to get there!

You can park more or less easily on the road to the cable car. It certainly depends on how many visitors are there at the time.
The fairly steep cable car itself costs €12 per person for a return trip.
We didn't expect that a little paradise awaited us down there in the village.
Beautiful fruit plantations line the way to the restaurant by the sea.
The prices here are absolutely acceptable! and you have a wonderful view over the Atlantic.
There are also loungers available, as well as public toilets and changing rooms.

Hi David,
We're visiting Madeira next month and are looking for unusual places to visit. One question - other posts don't make it clear whether the cable car is a return trip. Wouldn't want to have to walk back up !
Written 7 June 2019
Yes the cable car is a return trip!
Works from 10 am to 6 pm, in Summer up to 7 pm.
Written 7 June 2019
This sounds idyllic, but is the elevator/boat the only way out of the 'resort'? Also, the elevator seem to operate between 10 and 6, so I am guessing that it is not possible to go out for a late evening meal elsewhere.
I'd be grateful is anyone could share their experience.
Written 26 January 2017
The cable car or boat are the unique means to get to Fajã dos Padres, and that's one of the reason why the place is so special.
Guests staying at Fajã dos Padres may use the cable car out of it's regular opening hours, as long as the trips are arranged with the cacle car operator, so yes it is possible to go out for dinner when staying at Fajã dos Padres.
I hope you have the opportunity to experience staying in such a unique spot!

How do I get there using public transportation.
Thanks.
Written 2 May 2016
It is not very practical to get to Fajã dos Padres using Public transportation.
Buses from company Rodoeste (check Rodoeste's website) run from Funchal to Quinta Grande (about 2,5 km distance to the cable car), with a limited schedule. Be aware that some take a long time to get there.
The taxi trip from Funchal takes about 20 minutes, so this would the the best solution.
