Imposing and lush vegetation, many species of plants. This is a real forest, not just big shrubs like on the Canary Islands.

We came across the forest while driving on route E 209 from Ribiera Da Janela, southwards, on a foggy day which added to the atmosphere. The scenes of the forest were unique. Just watchout not to skid ...

No idea why so few reviews and I know not many people go there prefering widely advertised levada walks. This is a fantastic place, one feels like in an ancient forest from Talkien books. When we were there, there was a thick fog but it didn't prevent us from enjoying this magical place.

Full day coach tour from Funchal to the North West of the island. one of the highlights was to go through the Laurel Forest on our way to the Northern resort of Porto Moniz. We were very disappointed when approaching the forest area we were told by the tour guide that the road was closed due to a religious festival... More

This ancient woodland is one of many Unesco World Heritage sites which no visitor to Madeira should leave without seeing. I chose to see it as part of a guided levada walk from Ribeiro Frio to Portella, the last few kms of which are spent traversing this ancient woodland. It really is beautiful the way the light filters through the... More

There are several trails in Laurisilva, we did the Levada do Furado, which is 11 km between Ribeiro Frio to Porto da Cruz. We took bus 56 at 8 in the morning and bus 53 from Porto da Cruz back. It was just us and one person more who started at this point at this time, and once he left... More

We picked a short circular walk starting at the forestry building at Fanal from a book. Starting up and across moorland with cows grazing and then dropped down a narrow track with wooden steps. Turned onto PR13 and were soon walking through ancient laurel trees that looked as if they were Tolkien ents - gnarled trunks and branches covered with... More

One of the last places on Earth one can find the Laurisilva. As UNESCO put it "an outstanding relict of a previously widespread laurel forest type. It is the largest surviving area of laurel forest and is believed to be 90% primary forest. It contains a unique suite of plants and animals, including many endemic species such as the Madeiran... We choose to do the Leveda Dos Cedros (PR 14) walk. Had some difficulty finding Fanal - were expecting a more built up area than just a sign off the road! Parked up alongside the road and started our decent down hundreds of steps. It was worth it at the bottom as we reached a very peaceful place with a... More
