We love botanic gardens and had high hopes of this one due to the location. It costs 5.5 euros for an adult. It felt unfriendly from the start. Sadly the gardens looked shabby and rather neglected. Quite a few of the paths are beginning to break up, and many are steep with lots of steps, no adaptations for people with... More

My last visit dates back almost 20 years and the decline of those pretty gardens is very sad. Some plants suffered from the fires nearby, but basically from a botanical point of view the garden is still worthwhile. Buildings are going down the drain though, the lack of investments is evident and the gap between this garden and the gorgeous... More

We caught bus up to the gardens and it was an exhilarating experience twisting up the steep hills and hairpin bends. The gardens have some lovely areas but also some neglected parts and i was very surprised there was no guide or gift shop and the space given over to the shabby natural history museum full of stuffed birds could... Lots of lovely plants in flower and good to see that many flower beds are being renovated but the hard landscaping is shabby and out of touch with modern approaches to accessibility for the less mobile. The cafe has great apple tart and good coffee. Come on Funchal, you have a treasure in your botanical garden, put in the investment... More

I suppose that we were expecting to see a lot more colour with the plants, but lots of walking up & down slopes. Not really user friendly if you find it difficult to walk up inclines. Nice view down, but the actual botanical gardens is not one we'd recommend.

There wasn't much to see in the winter. If you've explored Madeira a bit, then there isn't much in the botanical garden that you won't have already seen growing in the wild or in farmer's fields.

We enjoyed the bus ride (29 or 31) up the steep twisting road. So unsurprisingly found the paths in the gardens steep too. We thought it had neglected feel, however there is a good enough variety of plants to make it interesting even though it was January.

This is a great place to visit during a visit to Madeira, and provides a good introduction to the island flora, albeit in a slightly more man made environment than I would normally prefer. Madeira is though known as the Island of Flowers, and this is really the best way to experience this. The paths are easy to navigate even... More

This is a good place to see, I've been there with my kids and they loved it. The plants are great, especially the local ones.
