Open to the public since 1991, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden occupies an area of 70.000 square meters and houses a huge exotic plant's collection, coming from all over the world, together with swans, duck's and Koi fish. The Monte Palace Museum is an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden. There are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world. Monte Palace, also includes one of the most important tile collections in Portugal. The tiles exhibited amidst the tropical vegetation represent several ages, coming from palaces, churches, chapels and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire. We are open everyday except 25th of December. Our prices are: Adults - 10€ Children younger than 15 years old: Free Entrance as long as they are accompanied by adults. A visit to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens is a must if you holiday in Madeira. It's great to go up in the cable car (€10) or you can catch a bus for a lot less if the prospect of the cable car terrifies you. Prepare to spend the best part of a day at Monte - it's not somewhere you... More

Although this visit was in November, the gardens remained interesting. Japanese Pagoda's and bridges, fish, swans and ornaments as well as tiles telling the history of the island,

The Tropical Gardens are outstanding and not to be missed. We have visited the other Botenical Gardens but this is the best.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. Its all down hill and then you have to walk all the way back up hill. Be warned. But it is worth it. Great flora and you will have a joy in the Japanese gardens. The African art exhibit is something to behold. Buy your pass as a combination pass with the cable car to save... More

We took the Cable Car to Monte (return is 15 euros). Went into the Monte Palace Gardens for 12.5 euros each - which bearing in mind it is November - was way overpriced. The museums had African carvings and rough semi precious stones. The old Palace was shut up tight, there were very few flowers out (but a lot of... More

The gardens are well worth visiting as they are both beautiful and interesting. Very pleasant walks and good to sit with a drink looking at the great views. Not very good for anyone who has walking problems as it is very hilly.

Well worth the trip up the cable car to the tropical gardens even in the rain! Quite a walk though could feel the muscle in my calves the next day. I did notice there are little cars for hire so anyone a little infirm shouldn't miss out.
