Open to the public since 1991, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden occupies an area of 70.000 square meters and houses a huge exotic plant's collection, coming from all over the world, together with swans, duck's and Koi fish. The Monte Palace Museum is an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden. There are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world. Monte Palace, also includes one of the most important tile collections in Portugal. The tiles exhibited amidst the tropical vegetation represent several ages, coming from palaces, churches, chapels and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire. We are open everyday except 25th of December. Our prices are: Adults - 10€ Children younger than 15 years old: Free Entrance as long as they are accompanied by adults. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. There were lots of beautiful flowers even in February. There are lots of streams, pools and lakes some of which have large Koi fish in them. Some of the paths are steep and there are cobbles and steps in places so wear sensible footwear. If you make it to the... More

Give yourselves plenty of time. There are gardens, sculpture and minerals exhibitions, house [but cannot go inside] plus places to eat and relax. It is a days activity and the garden walks are not for other than fitish people, they are on the side of a mountain, good paths but you need to take it easy!

You definitely need good walking shoes on and warm clothes. It's a shame that many of the flowers weren't in bloom yet as I should imagine that it will be beautiful later in the year. There was a very interesting and beautiful collection of minerals which we really enjoyed. It takes about two and a half hours to get round... More

The entrance to these gardens from the cable car make you think there's not much there but as you go on there is more and more this is most definitely worth doing with permanent exhibitions as well as being loaded with antique statues and superb garden designs.

We have been fortunate enough to visit as many countries as we've had years on this earth (69 since you ask) an d have visited many gardens, at home and abroad. Out of all these, the gardens in Monte are, as Tina Turner would say, simply the best. There is a bonus too: the wonderful views from the cablecar, whose... More

If you are visiting Funchal you must visit these gardens as they are truly stunning. We took the cable car up on what was a rather drizzly and overcast morning and so the views from the top were obscured but the weather created a special atmosphere all of its own which made our visit all the more interesting. The gardens... More

Beautiful gardens, well planned out and mature with some wonderful water features and interesting art work dotted around. Take some decent shoes and be prepared to walk as they are quite extensive. You can get a combined cable car and entrance ticket which will save you a few euros. Very much worth a visit.

We quite enjoyed our visit to these lovely gardens! We didn't know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised by its size and by the variety of plants. Unfortunately there weren't many flowers in bloom at this time of year. We especially liked the oriental gardens. This section was nicely designed and it was a lovely place to stroll. There... More

Hello HomedicMunes, thank you for writing this positive review. The golf cart may be used for those for example don't want to walk all the way up to the top and for 2,50€ pp for trip has that option. We hope to see you again another day! More

Very interesting layout of garden but not many flowering plants. It was February, so I suppose we were lucky to see anything colourful really.
