Open to the public since 1991, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden occupies an area of 70.000 square meters and houses a huge exotic plant's collection, coming from all over the world, together with swans, duck's and Koi fish. The Monte Palace Museum is an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden. There are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world. Monte Palace, also includes one of the most important tile collections in Portugal. The tiles exhibited amidst the tropical vegetation represent several ages, coming from palaces, churches, chapels and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire. We are open everyday except 25th of December. Our prices are: Adults - 10€ Children younger than 15 years old: Free Entrance as long as they are accompanied by adults. Having arrived and paid went through two facinating displays. One of Sculpture by Zimbabwian artists of figures and animals etc in wood. The other a collection of cristals. A fabulous site. The the decent into the Tropical gardens which a delight but you do need to be reasonably fit as it decends a long way down although on split levels... More

I think this garden is one of the highlights of Madeira. already the way up by cable car is so impressive. The garden is very beautifully arranged and you can choose different tours. The entrance is a little bit expensive but it is wothwhile visiting.

Absolutely stunning! What a beautiful and huge garden. Make sure you do allow at least half a day to see it all. We could only stay there for 1 hour due to our schedule but there was still so much to see in this amazing garden. It is a must see in the island!

The most beautiful garden in Madeira. I visited this place two times and it is always so enjoyable walk even it was smal rain. So tropical and green with lots of trees.

A beautiful garden with stunning views and a lovely way to spend a half day. Take the cable car (teleferico) up for the best views. The gardens are interesting and full of interesting things to see apart from the flowers.

This was my birthday treat, a hairy ride up on the 48 bus first, which we avoided going back down. Shame there's no discount for over 65s as in other Portuguese places. Unfortunately 2 of us have dodgy knees and we could not give the grounds their due. But worth the visit. Still plenty of colour in jan too.

We took the teleferico from the Promenade which allowed us to buy a combination ticket with entrance into the Gardens as well as a return trip of course. It is not a cheap excursion, but the gardens are quite breathtaking with two paths to follow. One which takes you on a route through the gardens and features the flora and... More

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden has been a paramount of our Madeira trip. It is a vast garden of lush flora, beautiful oriental artifacts, small streams and fairytale waterfalls. The garden is so mesmerizing that almost all visitors were left speechless and just wandered around marvelling at the beautiful colours and plants and carefully selected artifacts. The air is even... Beautifully laid out gardens with sections for different species. The Japanese gardens with fish ponds are particularly attractive. It is a place where you could spend hours wandering around or just sitting watching the world go by down by the lake. The cafe for snacks or lunch is in a secluded corner.

11th of January 2017 is a day that will stay with me forever such a beautiful place. We got the cable cars up had a look round had a spot of lunch then had a wonder through the gardens, following the map with interesting things to see going through the numbers. We made our way back up through the trees... More
