Set within the magnificent Palheiro Estate and lying adjacent to the five-star Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro – a Relais & Châteaux property – the 18-hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. At nearly 500 m (1640 ft) above sea level, the location is blessed with dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the vast Atlantic Ocean. Nestling below just 10 minutes away is Funchal, the island’s capital. Designed by renowned golf architect Cabell B. Robinson, this picturesque layout with year-round appeal takes full advantage of Madeira’s hilly terrain, with abrupt ridges and deep valleys providing a compelling challenge for even the most seasoned golfer.Teeing off here is to walk through a verdant and tranquil 200-year-old country estate, and an abundance of fragrant, exotic flora lends the course a unique and singular quality.

Slowest round ever, 5 hours 10 minutes for 2 ball with a buggy, 3 ball in front taking upto 20 minutes a hole. Course in very poor condition. Considering the cost £70 for transportation of clubs (jet 2) from Leeds/Bradford, £80 green fee, £40 buggy...More

We stayed at the Carlton and Ee almost didn't visit because of the reviews but I am glad we did. Some greens are recovering but overall experience was great. Stunning views and great design.

We booked the golf from our hotel Porto Mare and free transport was included for the price. It was disappointing that the course was in such poor condition. Bunkers were unplayable and treated as GUR and greens were in very poor condition. Fairways were full...More

So there's not so much grass as mud on the greens. The driving range is short irons only. My lawn is in far better nick than the fairways. Sandwich at lunch was by far the high point of the day. Avoid. Pricing is a rip...More

Have played the course several times in the past, and do not recognise the course now. It is the worst course I have ever played. A lot of the greens have got large patches with no grass, work had been done on the fairways but...More

The course is about 20 minutes outside of Funchal and provides courtesy buses if booked. We walked it carrying pencil bags which was fine until the 16th which was a steep climb and which, on top of the previous walking, nearly finished me off! I'd...More

The course isn't in great condition, with large bare patches on quite a few of the greens. The tees also could do with some TLC, as could some of the bunkers. That said, the layout of the course is good, with a lot of very...More

Thank you for your feedback - due to the extreme temperatures and other issues during the summer some areas of the greens were damaged and we are now working hard to get them in top shape for the winter season. Limited water supply during the...More

The staff are lovely, Gloria is very helpful as are the ground staff. Can't use woods on the driving range. There was a great deal of tree debris on the course and it was challenging up and down hills, definitely needed the buggy.

I'm sorry but if your a serious golfer this course isn't up to much. The overall condition was terrible. The tees where we'll at least 80 per cent like teeing out of the rough. All the fairways where mostly burnt and brown in colour. The...More
