    The best way to Monte
The better cable car is the one which starts just above the Madeira Botanical Gardens. It goes over a lush valley rather than residential areas and is a much more pleasant way to access the Monte area. From the upper terminus there is a short uphill walk to the Babosas and Monte area. The best way to reach the lower terminus is to take the 31A bus from central Funchal which finishes its journey at a car park above the terminus.

    Ultimately, its a cable car
Visited 09:00am on a monday morning in late May 2023. The ride takes about 20 minutes if you don't have to queue to get on. Ultimately, its a cable car. But it does have very nice views over Funchal and serves a very good purpose in getting you up to Monte for the Botanical Gardens and Toboggan ride. Felt a little pricey at 12.50 EUR pp.

    Amazing views
€12.50 one way for an adult. €18 to return. We went one way and tobogganed down. It is just 15 mins up and yes pricey for the time but the views are amazing. We took the other cable car to the botanical gardens and back and slid down to the stopping point where we walked the 30 mins back to the old town. The queue for the cable cars is for tickets. Book online. Same price. We would do it again to get to the top as there are still things to do there but a taxi would be cheaper. The toboggan is cash only. €30 for two. Long queue to get on (I suspect Susan Calman didn’t queue - but seeing her on tv made us book) but ticket queue tiny. Shops and bars at the top. A must do experience. We bought the photo for €10 from toboggan. A good morning out.

    Worth the time
For 18 euros a person round trip it takes you from the waterfront up to the gardens and several churches. The ride takes about 10 minutes and gives you some pretty good views of a beautiful city. Recommend for all ages

    Amazing views!
Cost us ~€20 for a round trip. We board at the bottom and went up, took ~5 minutes to get to the top. Everyone exits, you have the option to explore the sights, there’s a botanical garden at the top of the hill. There’s option to go on a toboggan as well here. Last trip down is 6:15pm. There are taxis at the top to get if you miss this. We only queued for 2 minutes but this can depend very much on if there are cruises in the port or bus loads of people arriving that day.

    Great views, up and down
I am afraid of heights and cannot get within 10 ft or a ravine or cliff unless there is a rail. But I loved the ride on this cable car! I had only ridden down after a visit to the Tropical Garden, but on a free day before leaving Madeira I went back to ride round trip. It is so lovely to look down on all the roofs, to look out to the sea, to see where I had been walking an hour before. there had been warnings about a queue for tickets or to get aboard, My experience was that the line moves rapidly, that everything is handled efficiently so don't be deterred. And while some have complained about paying 18 euros for the round trip, it certainly compares well to the Elevador de Sao Justa in Lisbon. Plus, I live in Florida, notoriously flat, so this was an experience I could never have at home.

    Pleasant and enjoyable ride
Quick way to get to the Monte and enjoy Funchal from above. The cable car ride is only 10-15 minutes. You can buy tickets on-line or on site but be careful which queue you are joining - one queue allows you to buy tickets in the ticket office and there is a second queue to board the cable car. When you arrive it is hard to tell which queue goes where so easier to ask people if you are not sure. Also, recommend buying tickets online. The queue goes quite quick but sometimes you have to stand in the sunshine.

Fantastic views of Funchal. Lasts about 15 mins and think if want return journey or not.
This cable car takes you from the seafront to Monte where you can go to Monte Palace and gardens or go across the valley on another cable car to Jardim Botanic gardens. Also of course if you only want to go one way on the cable car and then get the basket ride down (only goes so far and either walk rest of way which takes around 20 mins or get a taxi to the bottom), or just have a return cable car ride and spend some time up at Monte. It literally is about 15 mins ride but you get some fantastic views from it and from when you get up there. Can get busy especially if cruise ships are in.

    Beautiful views!
We took the cable car from Monte back to Funchal. Maybe we were just lucky, but we waited less than 5 mins to buy a ticket, and then boarded within 2 mins. Stunning views, well worth the price - definitely not for those afraid of heights though! :-)

    A must do
You use these to get to the top of the island so you can toboggan back down. They are well maintained and the views are good and the ride is smooth. We 1st went on a Wednesday morning and the queue was ridiculously big so we didnt bother. We went again on a Saturday afternoon and there was no queue and we were on within 5-10 minutes. Is it worth the money....probably not but its part of the Maderia experience. I've done it now but wouldn't do it again.

Cable car views are stunning on a clear day.
Price wise its expensive especially if you have a family.
The queues can be extremely long and you have to queue twice if you don't buy the tickets on-line which we didn't.

Stunning views.
Efficient process.
5 in our car, so plenty of room.
We went early, so it wasn't busy or too hot.
Bit pricey for a one-way ticket.
Photographs taken of you on the cable car at the start by organisers, but if you say no, they are not taken.

Enjoyable day out. We’ve been waiting years to go to the top but the queues have always been too long. We managed to pick a day without cruise ships in Funchal. We checked cruise ships itinerary on line and saw there weren’t any the day we went. 18 euros per person is rather expensive though. We didn’t do the Botanical gardens as they wanted another 6 or 7 euros for another cable car. The palace is also 15 euros per person entry fee so we didn’t bother. Restaurant and bar at the top is good for drinks and snacks and is REASONABLY priced !

Very disappointing experience. Tourists are being treated like cattle - pushed around by overworked employees who couldn’t care less that they are ruining their customers’ holidays. We were shoved into a cabin (3 families with children), barely having any room to sit (4 persons on a bench is a crowd, especially when you are a bit overweight). My wife got shouted at by the woman who is taking photos because she was not quick enough in looking at her and smiling at the camera (btw why aren’t they asking customers for their approval to take photos of them and ESPECIALLY of their underage children before actually taking the photos? I thought that the EU has specific GDPR regulations in place for that). We were unable to enjoy the view from the cabin - barely able to breath and move - we were looking forward to reaching our destination. These were the longest 20 minutes in my life. I would not recommend this tourist trap - travelling by bus to Monte and back is a much better option.

We took a return trip to visit the Monte Palace gardens and really enjoyed the ride both ways. It’s a very peaceful way to travel with good views.

The Funchal-Monte cable car goes from a station next to the bus station on the seafront. Even though we got there fairly early (before 10) there was already a long queue snaking all the way round and out of the building, presumably because there were cruise ships in - as there seemed to be most of the time we were in Funchal. However don’t be daunted, the cable cars come along every few seconds and the queue moves quickly, we were in one within 20 minutes. Various ticket options but we just got a return to the top as none of them seemed to include the Tropical Gardens. Takes about 20 minutes over the rooftops, a nice relaxing trip at a steady pace with fantastic views of the city and the sea. They take your photo at the bottom when you get in the car which they then offer to sell you at the top, but be warned it’s €12 if you want one which on top of the €18 each return fare makes for a bit of an expensive trip! The top station is right next to the entrance to Monte Palace Tropical Gardens.

Either you book online or be ready to stay in the line. Deppending on the day time it can be more than an hour. The view over Funchal and the sea is great. A round-trip is 24€ per person. The trip takes aprox. 20 min.

This is a nice but not cheap cable car ride up from the city seafront into the hills and its different attractions. Well worth doing for the sites at the top. Our second time here some ten years plus apart!

This was a wonderful experience with panoramic views all over Funchal. The journey was smooth and lasted about 15 mins, well worth the £10 for the journey. At the top, you take a walk around the botanical garden.

There are two cable cars, we recommend them both as they are different from each other. To go on the 2nd one turn right from where you get off (after touring the top). The 2nd one is more natural and takes you to the gardens.
