Acquired in 1840 by Charles Ridpath Blandy, the Blandy's Wine Lodge has always been and is still an integral part of the production of Blandy's Madeira Wine.

Located in the center of Funchal, Blandy's Wine Lodge allows visitors to Madeira an opportunity to experience first hand Madeira Wine in the making. Our tours will guide you through some of the history of the wine, its development and evolution, as well as the opportunity to taste the various styles of Madeira.

Blandy's Madeira celebrated its bicentennial in 2011, the Blandy Wine Lodges give you a privileged perspective on 200 years of Madeira Wine.

The lodge was bought by Charles Ridpath in the mid-19th century and not only was it an extremely valuable property, but was also very useful due to the fact that it was directly connected to the family's town house.

Each one of the Lodge's rooms have their own character and due to the differing temperatures and humidity, the wines all have differing ageing profiles based on their location within the lodge. The eastern warehouse holds wine dating back to 1920 and the family's private vintage collection is held within thick stone walls, below the ground floor. The museum holds artefacts that include letters from Sir. Winston Churchill, coins from Blandy's bank and the island's oldest wooden lagar, dating back to the 17th Century. Murals from the renowned German artist Max Romer decorate the tasting room and references from the company's wide range of vintage wines are held in the sala frasqueira.

Today the Lodge is the heart of the family's wine business where over 650 casks, tonnels and vats are stored, ageing the finest of the family's wines in the traditional canteiro method.

When visiting Funchal a trip to Blandy's for a Wine Tour and Tasting is definitely worthwhile. Several tours a day, the 14.50 English tour being the busiest so perhaps take an earlier or later tour if you haven't already booked. The tour guide is very friendly and informative regarding the history of the company and the making and storage of... More

Arrived between tours times, opted to sample some 15 year old instead, much the better option, can recall it as I write this, the smell and taste are so special well worth a treat with for some vintage wine. We purchased some Maderia to bring home and are back in Funchal every time we open the bottle!

Very Madeira winery : good target to visit and taste the wine afterwards. The guide is clear and makes jokes. The museum has a lot of objects to see. Quite a classic but good

Excellent small historical tour of the premises, with many museum pieces and original artifacts. Well guided with the opportunity to ask questions of our very knowledgeable host, followed by generous samplings and the opportunity to purchase with a discount.

There are 3 types of tour that vary in time and price. We went for the middle Premium Tour option which was just under €12 for the two of us and took 45 minutes. On our 11am tour there was a sizeable group but Rita was easily heard. She was also knowledgeable, had a good sense of humour and happy... More

Visted on a Saturday. Unfortunately the only tour we could get was the short tour as the place closed at 1. However the talk was very informative and interesting. Good souvenir shop.

We opted for the half hour tour which gave us an insight into the making of Madeira wine, with a tasting at the end. The shop has a wide range of Madeira wine to buy ranging from a few euro up to vintage wine at €650 for their oldest bottle. You can purchase in the shop, and collect at the... More

We had some vouchers for a wine tasting so found this and decided to return for a tour and booked the English speaking one. The guide had very good English and a sense of humour she also answered questions in a knowledgable way. It is an amazing old building and an interesting museum. The tasting gave you a chance to... A nice historical and unique par of the history of Madeira starting with an Englishman from Dorset. Tours of 30 or 45 mins are enough and reasonably priced at 5/7 euro. Take care to check tour times in your preferred language. Its in the centre of town so easy to combine with other local attractions eg the 30 minute movie... More

My husband and I both enjoyed this tour, it was good value, just over 10 euros for the 2 of us, took around 45 mins. We just turned up and were able to join a tour, but I expect in the summer you would need to book in advance. The young woman who showed us round had an excellent speaking voice... More
