Madeira Explores seem to be the number 1 guides, they are reliable and friendly with good local knowledge . They also take good care of anyone who might find the walking too difficult as was the case when we walked with them.

Although not the cheapest on offer ,this company gives an excellent service.Very professional with experienced lcoal guides. We did the Paradise Valley easy walk as an introduction and it was excellent not the least because of Alvero our top class guide.

I went to their randonnee from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo - the most difficult walk there is? and then to levada walk from Queidamas to Caldeirao Verde and back. Pick-up and return from and to the hotel, 10-16 persons/group....Fantastics trips for those who love trekking. You have to be in good condition to participate Pico Ruivo trip -... More

I've been on a number of lavada walks on the half-dozen trips I've now taken to Madeira in the past couple of years and can honestly say that far and away the best guides have been those from Madeira Explorers. As I stay down in the city rather than up the hill towards The Lido, I tend to book at... More

Having read all sorts of warnings about the potential dangers of lavada walking we opted to go for a guided walk. We chose Madeira Explores, not the cheapest but we were impressed from the start. Adriano our guide arrived on time was friendly and drove extremely carefully. Up some hairraising roads to get toCaldeirao Verde. From the start of the... More

A truly amazing walk - about 10km. Great views and very humorous and knowledgeable guide in Alvro (not sure about spelling). It was described as a moderate walk which was probably fair. You may need a waterproof to negotiate a waterfall. Well worth the money.

I signed up for a hike to Pico do Arieiro, but when we got there the weather was so bad (visibility was about 50 metres) that the tour guides offered the option to do a different hike instead or to be taken back to our hotels with a full refund. I chose the alternative hike, which went from Machico to... More

We did two half day Lavada walks with them, The one on the north coast was spectacular and not to strenuous, about 6km on flat paths, but you need a head for heights. Our guide for both days was Maria, she was great and very knowledgeable about all the plants we came across. The second day was on the south... More

If you like walking, choose one of the levada walks with Madeira Explorers. You need to be reasonably fit depending on distance, and warm clothing may be required. Wet weather gear also useful especially if you have to negotiate waterfalls.
