History of Madeira in a glimpse
Sep 2021
Place divided into roughly 2 floors (ground floor+shop & 2nd Floor).
"Museum" is a too strong defining word for this offered service since it is not taking the whole space of the building but "has to" share it with a souvenirs shop.
In general, it has a more or less complete description of Madeira's history since its beginning (the interactive parts were not working/available at the time I went there Sep.21).
The price for a ticket is not bad (5EUR).
Ambient during the walk through this place is complemented with sounds of fightings/sea and some monologues in french and english.

Quick introduction to the history of Madeira for a rainy day
Oct 2020
An ideal way to bring yourself up to speed on Madeira is with a visit to the Madeira Story Centre. We spent about 2 hours there one rainy Sunday afternoon. The exhibits are arranged chronologically from the volcanic beginnings through to the present day with short but informative descriptions in four languages, Portuguese, English, French, and German. Some of the interactive exhibits were unfortunately not in working order, and in the lighting could have been a little stronger here and there, but overall this did not detract from the visit. The entrance ticket costs a very reasonable €5/person and gives you a 10% discount in the souvenir shop at the end.

Stay away from this place! We were robbed 😒
Sep 2020 • Couples
My boyfriend and I was there for 2 beers and when we asked for our bill there was a surprise, somehow one beer was 3,5€ and we got like 7€ for 2 beers. 🙄 The most choking thing is that we are a Portuguese couple and we know how much a beer cost. After we couplain about it we also got other surprises next day, the owner let us know that we paid as a Turist so it means that they have 2kind of prices... 🙄

An interesting afternoon, and great intro into Madeira.
Feb 2020
I walked past this place everyday without realising it was a museum! It was only via Tripadvisor that I realised it was a museum not a shop.
I spent a pleasant afternoon looking and learning about Madeira history, navigation, culture, flora and fauna.
A really nice accompaniment to The Madeira video history on the other side of town which I'd gone to a few days before.
Little kids would probably enjoy 20 - 30 minutes here, whereas I enjoyed an hour or more strolling around.
Very friendly staff.
I would love it if there was a video presentation of old footage of Madeira / local life, even without narration. I just love observing how people used to live.

Great summary of the history of Madeira
Feb 2020
We'd passed here a few times whilst being on a day trip from a cruise liner, so were pleased to have time to do the place justice whilst actually staying in Funchal for a week. Unlike some other museums, we were pleased to find this was open on a Monday.

The exhibits are well done and laid out in an interesting and absorbing way, so you learn a lot about the history of Madeira, and we found much more made sense for the rest of our holiday.

Even if you don't fancy going into the museum itself, it's free to go up to the top for the panoramic view.

An interactive museum telling the history of Madeira. Lots of interesting exhibits, film and background information about all aspects of life in Madeira through the centuries. Take time to watch, listen and read as you learn fascinating stories of the island.
So much to hold your attention. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Didn't think was as good as the one in Lisbon, preferred the Maderia film experience and guided walk.

Worth a visit
Jan 2020 • Couples
Interesting museum and a very good place to find out about the history of the Island.
Located between the restaurants close by to the cable car.
It is billed as an interactive museum but there is a lot of reading to do so may not suit some very young visitors. Unfortunately a number of the interactive displays were not working when we visited . Nevertheless, we came away much better informed and for just €5 per adult pretty good value. Don’t miss the top floor restaurant, for lunch or dinner, your entrance ticket gives you 10% discount.
