- Antony S3 contributionsHidden history of Madeira warts and all.The Madeira Story Centre has a very un inviting entrance, but when you get past this and enter the 2nd floor display you will be presented with information on a Madeira that includes bronze age and Roman references and honest references to the use of slaves to build the infrastructure of this island. This refreshing honesty is usually glossed over or ignored in the other tours and exhibitions that I was part of. Most information starts from and ends with the views of the white European and ignores the Moors and the use of black slaves who died in huge numbers to build this profitable island business. Europeans are at the centre of the story but other peoples are not written out.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 August 2023
- RoverPInverness, United Kingdom700 contributionsShabby looking but well worth a visit. This looks very shabby from the outside and first impressions on the inside aren't great either, but don't let this put you off. Up via the lift to the 2nd floor takes you to the exhibition. It could certainly do with some refurbishment but the exhibition is well laid out and tells the story of Madeira at just the right level to get a good introduction to the island and it's history. Text is in 4 languages Portuguese, English, Spanish and German). Going up to the next level takes you to a spacious (and largely empty) cafe with great views. You can also get onto the roof for even better views and to watch the cable cars go past.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- Julie C5 contributionsVery poor lightingThe museum was well laid out and had some interesting material but it was so poorly lit that one strains to read the boards with information. I didn’t find it a good experience. It’s seemed quite unnecessary to be so dark and dingy.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 November 2023

We really enjoyed our visit to this, admittedly quirky museum / interpretation centre. Lots to see with interesting explanations, and a bit of the scary stuff to keep kids enthralled. Spread out over a number of floors, the Madeira Story was just the initiation we needed at the start of our week on the island; it was fun and informative at the same time !

Great little museum. Everything is also translated into English. Lots if displays and interactive sections, things to move, do, try and smell! There is a lovely roof top terrace where you can sit and enjoy a drink. It over looks the cable cars and the beach/sea to one side and the other a view to the mountains where they reach the clouds. The story of madeira was interesting and we really enjoyed learning its history! It's definitely worth a visit, the only thing we didn't find great was the staff. They weren't very friendly and we didn't feel the level of hospitality you'd expect. Otherwise it was a great experience.

Not the easiest to find, but worth the effort and the small entrance fee.
It's a chronological trip of Madeira through the ages with plenty of historic detail.

So not worth the €5 to get in. Claims to be an interactive museum but all the interactive elements were broken or off. Very text heavy which isn’t ideal with young children. And not all information really relevant or part of Madeira’s history. Honestly just a bit of a tourist trap so give it a miss!

We liked the idea of having dinner at this place. We booked a lovely corner table on the rooftop restaurant.
Service was terrible. We sat for 30 minutes before anyone even came and took a drinks order. They got our food order wrong - there were only 2 of us! Having asked me if I'd like garlic bread, it never arrived.
My wife's salmon was apparently very nice. My chicken on a skewer was average - just 4 pieces of chicken thigh or drumstick. Meant to come with chips, but didn't and when they brought me some, they had been cooked too quickly and were hard inside.
We left after 1hour 25 minutes and we'd only had one course.
Suggest avoiding.

As it says "story" centre !!! And not hi-story centre, nor "museum".
Close to the cable car where many tourists walk around ...
But watch out!!
Trashy place and verbaly agressive man insisting on just selling tickets and refusing to answer our questions ?! We gave it a try in different languages : English, French, German, ("bad") Portuguese.... but he smashed some papers behind his ticket booth and took off?!
OMG 🙈🙉🙊
Avoid this terrible place.... so many nice things to see and do in beautiful and usualy! friendly Funchal/Madeira.

After visiting the museum we stayed for a snack. We ordered a shrimp and avocado starter but what came was main course size and delicious.

Hi. The museum costs 5Eu.each. There is quite a good website if you want to check first. We only looked at the exhibits as we passed them en route to the lift that took us up to the rooftop restaurant.

We will be arriving 24 th February 2017. We have an over night stop with cruise ship. My sister isn't very mobile what are the pathways like for pushing wheel chair?

The madera story centre is located in the old part of the town, look out for the cable car and its opposite, a lot of the paths are cobbled and whilst the path way from where the ships dock is fairly level and new some areas are cobbled and uneven but it is quite level and not too far. Lovely restaurant upstairs, there is a lift. Clean toilets down stairs

this is sad news as it was a good place with almost the best disabled toilet in the area.
a big thanks to all the staff who worked at the centre and i hope that they have other jobs.
lets hope that with all the building work along the harbour and seafront that a little space is found for a place tile the Maderia story
