Our small group had a short guided tour of this embroidery factory, which explained each stage of the process both before and after the pieces are sent to the ladies in the countryside who do the embroidery itself. I never knew there were so many steps involved!
There is an on-site shop and yes things are expensive but you understand why when you have seen or had explained the painstaking individually hand made nature of each piece; nothing is done automatically and the labour involved is incredible to produce these gorgeous pieces.

What a truly enjoyable and amazing morning learning how to do Madeiran Embroidery!! Such great teaching from Celeta and help with translation and organising from Marcia. We were taught from the very beginning to the end result. Wonderful teaching from Celeta, and every step explained and demonstrated. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone interested in embroidery xxx. We also had a tour of the factory and we all loved every minute of it. Such beautiful works to buy as well as kits to take away.

For many years, I have admired Madeira embroidery - and here is a place to view and select the "real thing": authentic madeira embroidery !

Service was outstanding in helping me with a selection of shirt in a color, size, and fit that worked for me. It was a great pleasure to be at Bordal, to see the array of embroidery, and make my selection !

Visited Bordal twice while on Madeira and walked away with 2 tablecloths, 14 napkins, 4 guest towels, and 2 facemask. Never have I experienced such a warm and welcoming service from all in the shop. It includes the Ladies working there to the owners. Bordal is the place for embroidery. It can take up to a year to make a tablecloth. They are second to none and a must visit when in Funchal, Madeira. They know How to take Care of customers.

We were just wandering around the streets of Funchal when we passed a woman making lace. She was sitting at the foot of a staircase that led up to the shop. There was lots of beautiful examples handmade lace on display and a short (10 minute max.) video to watch on the screen of a small tablet. Sadly, there was nobody inside making any lace and nothing else to see. Nice way to spend a quarter of an hour but nothing special.

Thanks for the evaluation and it was a pity, but on December 31st the factory is closed which is why it was possible to see it.

Nearly every tourist shop sell embroidery but (from the price) much of this is now factory made. Traditional hand embroidery is labour intensive and expensive - eye wateringly so at times...

Bordal is the best place to go for genuine hand embroidery and has a wonderful selection to choose from . Prices are not, however, immediately obvious.

On a Saturday there was a lady sitting outside the shop embroidering a tablecloth.

Inside there is a display of different transfer designs as well as information how these are printed on the cloth for embroidery. Understandably, you are asked not to photograph these.

I´m an usual client of Bordal. Last wek I went there again. The service is very good, Márcia is outstanding, and the stock of embroideries is constantly improving. To coma to Madeira without going to Bordal it´s like going to Rome and don´t sse the Pope.

The hand embroidery shop that sells beautiful pieces of embroidered Linen, Clothes, Table cloths etc are stitched according to ancient methods, was a very interesting place.
Such beautiful pieces of intricate hand embroidery.
Price is high due to the time consumed to make each piece
One has to see it to appreciate the delicate work.
A person described how it was done according to tradition, from copying the pattern to the finished product, which was very interesting.
Enjoyed the visit very much.

I had the luxury of finding out about the embroidery class and I was treated like an old friend. Such exquisite works but the ladies themselves are treasures. They mad a mere male feel very welcome and such pride is taken in their work. I could happily go back for a refresher course, as I still haven't finished the practise handkerchiefs we worked. And thanks to the other three ladies on the course with me; a pleasure to meet like minded people who value Madeira Lace. Thank you so much. Regards Ian RH

Visited this shop/museum after the disappointment of the Madeira Embroidery Museum IBTAM.

Just as we arrived, a tour group came in and barged past us as we were asking to visit the workshop which also serves as a museum. The nice lady we spoke to said we could go up when they had finished, so while we were waiting we looked round the shop. She was very helpful and explained about the different traditional patterns etc. and how each piece has to be verified and certified by the Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts before it can be sold as handmade (look for the blue and white label for authenticity). We bought some souvenirs and were about to go up to the workshop when another tour group came in and took priority. Unfortunately, the shop was about to close for lunch, so we were advised to come back in 2 hours, but this meant we would have missed our bus so the nice lady invited us to have a seat by the desk and showed us a video on the iPad which she said would give us as much information as the tour would.

Disappointed, as the video was good, but not the same as watching someone actually doing it...
