Not far away from the cable car station in Monte lie the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte with an impressive staircase in front. Inside the baroque decoration is breath taking, as is the view as you exit the church, which is famous for its historic tomb of the exiled Carol King the Austro-Hungarian empire. This is a beautiful church where you... More

just seconds before they closed this church for some kind of lunch recreation we dropped into it, adjusted our eyes to the darkly interior and noticed the richness if the the wealth of the altars inside. With the look upwards I was overpowered by the also dark wooden cover.

Not far away from the cable car station in Monte. Interior is rather modest, but with the grave of the last Austrian emperor.

The church has a wonderful position high above Funchal with lovely views. It is a beautiful church with lovely interior. It is interesting for its connection to the last Habsburg emperor, Charles. His grave is here as well as a statue outside.

The centrepiece of a visit to Monte is the church, approached over nearly 70 steps. Inside the baroque decoration is breathtaking, as is the view as you exit the church, which is famous for its historic tomb of an exiled Austrian King.

Great location overlooking Funchal. This is a nice church, signed as Igreja Ingles from Monte square. The resting place of the last Austrian monarch, who died in exile in Monte.

Do go in to have a look even if you're not a church goer. It's beautiful and so colourful with chandelier's and murals on the wall. You can sit and pray. Take photos and nobody bothers you. Such a lovely restful place.

This is probably one of the most iconic places to visit in Funchal. We got the bus up and the cable car down. There is quite a bit to look at in Monte, so don't limit yourself to the church. The church however is one of the finest on the island. The climb up the stairs is worth it. The... More
