Lovely Mass
Mar 2020
Visited the church end of Feb, so glad we did!
Got there in good time, as we`d heard it`s quite small, to find they were having a new beautiful wood floor fitted so unfortunately most of the altar was obscured by a screen.
This didnt detract from the service however, some lovely little extra touches from Fr Bernardino.
Would highly recommend, so good to visit this beautiful island and hear Mass in English

Nice Mass last Sunday
Jan 2020 • Couples
Having read the good reviews about this chapel, we decided to come to the English Mass at 10:00 a.m. ( each Sunday). The small church was crowded and Don Bernardino did the Mass with joy and warmth. Highly recommendable for English speaking people.

English mass on Sundays
Aug 2018
Small church on way into Funchal. Increasingly attended by English-speaking (Catholics) for Sunday Mass and limited seating/views to alter. Optional tea and chat with old and new friends.

Find Faith in a special place, but mind your head!
Sep 2017
This Catholic Chapel is a must for those who still love their faith! This ancient chapel in the past, was a shrine to Our Lady and attracted pigrims from all over the world to its tiny enclave. Mass on Sunday Morning at 10.am in English is a joy. Celebrated by a wonderful Christian man, Father Bernardino. He is to Christianity what Ronaldo is to football! A warm, caring, loving, and beautiful person, who embraces people of all denominations, and will pray with you, and for you, during every mass. He once told me that Jesus never came to establish the Catholic Church but the "Kingdom of God". Ecumenism flows in his veins as does his faith in humankind. There are not many like him left, so dont miss the opportunity of this very fulfilling experience. Tea and coffee and cakes are served in the little house which gives you chance to look over the ocean and enjoy the time with other like minded people. You do not have to be a Catholic to listen to the Word of the Lord so please come and join in a beautiful experience. You will not regret it!

spiritually uplifting
Jul 2016 • Family
I visited this quaint parish in 2014 for Christmas with my great Aunt with athritis in her legs. She was so happy to greet the priest who could understand her culture, and he has been well-traveled.
This is a church for couples with young children. It is the size of a classroom. Singing is encouraged and tea is served after Mass.

Donations are asked, but only small change in Euros that will not be used back home.

I have great photos of this parish that I am struggling to find.

Impressive

Standing impressively overlooking Funchal is the church after mounting the long set of steps you enter an impressive beautiful church. Free to enter and no over the top collection box. The tiles statues and altar are impressive worth the struggle up.

The toboggan ride below the church
Nov 2015
Madeira is beautiful. Visit the stadium where Cristiano Ronaldo started his soccer life at age 5. Visit the volcano that now is home to thousands.Visit the mercado where you won't leave hungry. They give you samples of all the fabulous fruits that you know or other exotic ones .

Favorite. The toboggan ride. Don't miss it.

Wonderful Experience
Aug 2015 • Friends
I was accompanying a friend to Sunday Mass during our short stay in Funchal I have been to many masses at home and abroad but have to say the true meaning to faith and community was every so evident in this small but beautiful gathering.
The English speaking mass begins at 10am and lasted well after the usual hour that we are used to at home but time was not important.
Everyone was made so welcome and people from the small congregation of locals and visitors were invited to do the readings, prayers of the faithful, lay ministers and sing.
Fr Bernardino was such a wonderful presence and full of interesting stories that made his faith and belief come alive.
I wouldn't consider myself to be full time mass goer or defender of the faith but I found this one of the most beautiful simple but incredibly effective services that I've attended in a long time.
Thank you Fr Bernardino for giving me lots to think about in my life and perhaps how I can give more to others
