Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It is a nice square where there is a monument with a shield and sword representing Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal. It is a cool monument.

Largo da Misericordia is a largish, by Portuguese and European standards, public square. It is paved and it has water fountains at either end. It is used by pedestrians quite a lot, but they have to share it with cars. There are a few shops around, like cafes and the like, but not too many that we could see on the day we were there. At one end of the square is a bank, while at the opposite end is the Igreja da Misericordia, after which the square gets its name no doubt. Also outside this church is a very interesting sculpture which is meant to represent Afonso I, also called Afonso Henriques, Afonso the Conqueror, or Afonso o Conquistador, the first King of Portugal. It is a stone sculpture representing a figure holding a shield and weapon. The square is "surrounded" by the amazing architecture of multi storeyed buildings constructed long ago, which add real character to the Square. This is a lovely place which presents a picture of the real Guimaraes and the real Portugal and is definitely worth visiting.

The square probably took its name from the very interesting church of Igreja da Misericordia. On the right side of the church there is also another building with this name, Santa Casa de Misericordia. Charitable activities and social assistance have been carried out there for several centuries. Of course, number one is the building on the left side of the church. This is the famous Casa dos Lobo Machado, which is distinguished by its beautiful façade. The well-kept tenement houses on the square look very nice. Often with facades covered with tiles and well-kept balconies. In the square in front of the church we can also notice an unusual fountain. Overall, it is another attractive square in the historic part of the city.
