Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I love that this town offers 98% of their touristic attractions for free to the public! This is one of them and lovely too! Less than a 10 minute (a bit up hill) from the Cathedral and you get amazing views! The touristic office downtown by the bus station told us about this Castle and at the castle the lady told us about "Antonio" a corps and other ruins from 9-11th Century! And the lady at the Nucleo Arcológico told us about the Cistern that was also very old and all within 10 minute walking radius.

Our GPS took us to the road just below and it was an easy few minutes walk. A friendly local pointed out that we had parked in a farmacia park so we moved a few yards and put in €1 and pushed a green button to get a ticket even though it was sabado (Saturday) morning. The castle is basic as it would have been back then but it had a crossbow and a catapult. Explanations were written in Portuguese but the ladies at the office were very helpful. The castle has no entrance fee.

It is a small castle but well maintained and with a good capacity for public access. All exhibitions are free and the people available and friendly.

Wonderful castle inside and out. Externally are statues and a fountain as well as a tiled mural.
Views are terrific from the top. The quick way to walk down is using the near 700 steps which take you down to the town centre - near a memorial to the unknown warrior.
From there is a great view looking back up the steps and towards the castle.
In my view, well worth a visit.

We climbed up to the castle. Beautiful viewpoint but not much on offer. Great photographic opportunity. It was Sunday so pretty much all of the businesses were closed on the way up. Take water with you as there’s nothing available at the top.

A quaint castle overlooking the town . Built above the town it gives a great view of 360 degrees. It was built over a Roman site and is reached through a medieval city gate. The castle's fine tower gives some impression of how the fortifications must have been. You can walk along part of the defensive walls.

Free entrance and a very hospitable local guide explaining the castle's history. Lamego being one of the oldest towns with Guimaraes carries a ton of history. Castle is pretty with a big watch tower to be seen from far. Our car was parked just below in the main street, 5 mins walk to the tower.

We parked the car and were intending to go to another place but thought we’d have a look at the Castle first. It’s good to see the Keep but our favourite thing was actually wandering through the streets inside the old walls. The homes are just as they would have been! It’s like stepping back in time.

Located in the narrow streets of the old town there are very good views of the district. Sadly, when we were there, the fires were raging in the forests around the town. Visit the new archaeological museum nearby

There are two ways up at least to the castle if when you turn off of the main road you turn right it is VERY steep. If you turn left it's easier! The castle is quite small with nit a lot in it except if course it's history. The views are worth the walk though!
