You really do have to walk along the waterfront, hopefully on a sunny day. The views of the bridges and the water are superb, and there are hundreds of places to stop for a drink. A tourist experience, to be sure, but a good one. Some musicians along the way, hopefully you will hear a good one; we did not!

One of the buzzing hearts of Oporto with its narrow riverside streets, bars, restaurants, street performers and much more besides. Fasten your money belts for security and then enter into the spirit of the area. Great.

Buzzing and crowded. The most popular place to be in Porto by far. Even more enjoyable that walking along the busy quay was exploring the tiny, narrow alleyways above the river.

Cais da Ribera is the street that runs along the Douro from the Pestana Vintage Hotel to the Ponte Louis I bridge. Home to many bars and restaurants and to the boat trip sellers on this side of the river and to street buskers and musicians ( look out for the old man who paints himself silver and poses as a chiming clock, well worth a few coins. It is a magnet for tourists and is always busy, but always lively and always fun.
This section affords great views of the iconic metal bridge and Vila Nova de Gaia on the opposite bank with its many port wine lodges.
It also has the advantage of catching the afternoon sun and is a great spot to sit outside one of the many Bart’s with a Porto Tonic and watch the world and his wife walk by.

This reminds me of Ocean drive, or Corniche, or Copacabana.
Maybe 2 miles of walk on one side of Douro river.
Shops, eat and drink.
It's closed for traffic, so I parked couple streets over, then you have options:
Walk,
Or Railway cart.
The place is full of life.

Great place to people watch from the cafes, the 6 bridge river cruises have little booking tables and all pretty similar priced. It was very busy but an attractive waterfront quayside.

One minute you're in Porto, the next you're in Cais da Ribeira. Both towns are wonderful but so different. So much to do. Take in Porto then walk across the Dom Luis I Bridge, down the Porto Gaia cable car and enter into Cais da Ribeira. The town is full of shops, outdoor restaurants and gives you a perfect view of Porto. Enjoy your trip!

The Ribeira district is one of the city's oldest neighborhoods, located on the slope and riverbank of the river Douro. This is of course one of the most beautiful and vibrant parts of Porto with its colorful facades facing the river and winding alleys up the mountain. Although the area feels geared towards tourists, I think it still has an authentic feel. Take a walk along the Cais da Ribeira, the boats that ply the river, admire the Ponte Dom de Luis bridge and look over to the opposite bank where the Port Houses of Vila Nova de Gaia are located. If you get hungry, there are many traditional Portuguese restaurants in this area. You will also find many of the city's attractions in this area such as Palacio da Bolsa, Igreja de Sao Francisco and Casa do Infante. Also, do not forget to leave the quay for a while and get a real medieval feel on some of the very narrow streets in the area. Rua da Fonte Taurina, for example, is a very good start.

This is the area of Porto along the Douro River where there are many restaurants, bars and Rabelo boats for river cruises. We took a river cruise late afternoon and enjoyed watching the sunset, the many bridges and returned to see the lights at night.
