About
This traditional open-air market first opened its doors in 1837, and remains a historic icon and heart of the city of Porto. The restored and stylish Beaux-art style building houses around 80 traditional stalls and family-run businesses over three floors, selling a variety of fresh produce, fish, meat, and wine, alongside newer coffee shops and restaurants. Beyond food, you can also shop for unique souvenirs like perfume and jewelry from a range of local brands. There are even vendors offering services like knife sharpening. Visit the market along a tapas or walking tour of Porto to learn more about Portuguese street food and culture. – Tripadvisor

    Outstanding market, with great food
My apartment was a block away from this market. I visited multiple times, each time sampled different food. The best value was €6 for ten large shrimps. I'm a shrimp lover, and these were among the best I ever had. Fresh (shell peeled off easily), briny yet sweet, and has a bit of crunch. No dipping sauce needed. I returned for a second order.

One of the best outdoor markets I've seen.
I've been to a lot of markets in my travels, and this is one of the best. The myriad and varied fruit and vegetables are incredibly fresh and tasty. There you can indulge in fresh oysters, prawns, calamari, fish, all kept cold and hygienic by being sprayed with water every now and again. There are also amazing meats, breads, pastries, sweets, beers, wines, coffee........ Basically, anything anyone could wish for to have as a meal. The one drawback is that there are not nearly enough tables and chairs, so you will find people standing like hawks watching for people to get up from a table so they can grab their places. It is also one of the cleanest markets I have seen with isles wide enough so that you do not have to keep on bumping into people who are standing at stalls or trying to push others out of the way as you are navigating your way to the differing stalls. The prices, whilst not cheap, are reasonable.

Well worth a visit to stock up on picnic goodies
I loved this market. We were staying nearby and it became our go to for reasonably priced provisions. There's fresh fruit salad, smoothies, freshly made sandwiches to take away, a myriad of dried fruit and nuts - basically everything you need under one roof to create a delicious and cheap meal. Colourful, friendly, clean and bustling.

    good
Good. It basically turned into a touristic place, but it is still a good choice to have a fast lunch. Prices changed from the past accordingly, but it is still a good choice (price/quality) for a fast lunch when there

    Great Stuff
Excellent place for a break. Plenty to see and do. You have stalls selling a bit of everything. There are tables and seats at one end, so split up get some cheese, some cold cuts, seafood and wine and have a nice lunch watching people go around. everyone seems to speak English and prices are actually kind of normal.

    Must visit in Porto
Great place to spend an hour, browse for all kinds of market foods - cheese, fruit, olives, bread. Snack on pastries ( love the chicken, duck or meat pies) pick up a coffee and take in the vibe. Good value for money.

Lovely place full of food and drink for all!! And clean toilets 😉
I took a tour on a small "car/train" and it brought us through here. I really enjoyed my visit, except that I had just eaten 🙄. From fruits and vegetables to fresh oysters and much more! Come and enjoy!! I was mostly impressed by the variety of tropical fruits since I am from Puerto Rico! 😉

    Nice Market
I stopped here to purchase tinned seafood. Several booths had good assortments. Prices were much cheaper than the tourist shops - about €4-5 per tin. The market is beautiful and very clean. I was told that this was a locals’ market but it looked pretty touristy to me. Lots of English signage and lots of tourists. A great place to shop but not too authentic IMO.

    Real Nice and Interesting Market!
This market was so cool! We walked around early when it opened prior to going on our walking tour, and we had so much fun looking at all the types of food! Then we came back again to actually eat lunch here! The food was quite delicious, and we even ordered wine at one of the vendors. Talk about reasonable in cost....wow! There weren't many tables and chairs in which to sit and enjoy a meal, so many of us sat on the stairs in the entry to the restrooms and other areas. It was a real fun experience! I even purchased one of the classic trivet tiles at this market!

We started our visit here by grabbing a glass of wine and then proceeded to walk and look at what was being sold.

There's a great selection of food, drinks, souvenirs and groceries here. Quite a few places serve street food which you can eat either at one of the few tables or on the stairs, which is exactly what we did.

My only suggestion is - be wary of places that don't display a price and ask first before ordering. We ended up paying €30 for a plate of cheese. It was great cheese and there was a fair bit of it, but very clearly overpriced.

Overall a really enjoyable experience and we'd definitely be back. Just remember that it's not open on Sundays.

The Mercado do Bolhão was the real produce market for the city of Porto. As shopping patterns change it became run down and in serious need of renovation, a makeover. This has been done. Inevitably it is now a tourist attraction, a bit of a theme park. I understand that is what has to be done and it won’t be a working market again. Mercado do Bolhão is a very nice tourist attraction, but tourist attraction it is.

This is a large wonderful open new market with many vendors. Buy fruit, meat, spices, a gift or have lunch or dinner on the 3rd floor that has five nice restaurants. Walk the market with a glass of wine. Enjoy

Lovely market. Purpose built and well thought and laid out. Plenty of shade, good space to browse and a large selection of stalls selling tempting nibbles, wines and beers. Well worth stopping by at lunchtime. Recommend browsing the stalls and then picking something up to eat.

The Mercado do Bolhao has been around for more than a century and still thrives with energy and color. Enjoyable to pass through and appreciate the local products.

I visited the market to see local products, but the market looks more like tourist maret. Tourists are walking aroud with food or a glass of wine. It is clean and well organized, but lacking of vibrant market atmosphere.
Bit dissappointed.

You must visit when in Porto. Great place for nibble and drinks. So many people wandering around with glasses of wine. The building was great, and there are so many great stalls of local produce.

We had not really planned to come to the market but more happened to come by and went in, and it was one of the best experiences in Porto: the market has great variety of food and we tasted many different things, incl. mussles, sardines, nuts and wine. So it was like a tasting lunch for us. Also, the market was very clean and the people there very friendly. For us, one of the best sights in Porto to visit.

This is a good looking market, with produce of all sorts and coffee and wine and beer available. However I can’t help but agree with a previous reviewer, it seems to be aimed mostly at the tourist market and there were guided tours taking place. We are fortunate to live somewhere with beautiful independent shops so this was a bit of a disappointment to us, although it was still worth a look round.
