Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

On the way to my hotel, The Mercure, to check in, I saw a banner for a performance at this theater on the same block. Performance was “Between outside and me”, performed by Akram Khan, and, Jermaine Spivey and a cast of dancers. It was that night and it was My first night in Porto. The ticket was 5E, front row. The performance is what I would call modern dance. The performance was absolutely beautiful. Brought a smile to my face. How lucky to have such an enjoyable night only one hour since I checked in my hotel.

We walked into the building just to see the foyer and spoke to the young lady behind the reception desk. We decided to take the 1 hour guided tour (€3 with Porto card). It was excellent (although she stated up front it would be in Portuguese, she provided audio devices which gave us the information in English and went out of her way at each stage to ask if we had questions and to provide information in English). Overall we were very impressed with the theatre, not least because of the friendliness and professionalism of the tour guide.

There has been a Theatre on this site since the 17th Century, with the Current building dating from 1906, it a great looking building, you can take guided tours, but my itinerary didn't permit the time, but it was certainty worth a Photo-stop.

A really good value tour which walks you through the public and private areas of this elegant theatre.
The building was not only built to present theatrical productions but, in its hay day, as a place to be seen. There are seeping, plush carpeted, stairways leading to balconies overlooking grand and ornate rooms. As you take the stairs higher up the building, to the seating reserved for the less affluent patrons, the stairs become narrower, the carpet disappears and the experience is altogether lass lavish. Interesting to experience the architectural social demarcation.
Going to the top of the building and walking through the fly tower, with its dizzying views down onto the stage, is fascinating. The auditorium is stunning with its gold sculptural decorations and restored ceiling painting.
The theatre had a chequered history falling into disrepair, becoming a cinema and being renovated. The tour takes you through some of this history as you walk through the building. Text and audio is available in several languages.
The tour lasts 50 mins and costs €5.

We did an escorted tour of the theatre. There was just the two of us. The guide spoke perfect English and took us everywhere: the stage , costume area , props and up above the stage. A wonderful tour well worth it.

Theatro Nacional Sao Joao is a nicely built structure located on Batalha Square. It was closed during our time of visit in the morning by early June.

Teatro Nacional Sao Joao is an ancient building in Batalha Square. Due to time constraint, we have not paid visit to the internal part of the theatre. It is worthwhile to tour around the area while visiting Porto.

It was just few steps from our hotel. Unfortunately they didn't played anything, but we could visit the mai hall. It is simple beautiful. We had another experience, in the Sao Bento sa Vitoria cloister they play as well. We had a very interesting ballett there.
