The Douro River has an ancient history. It was the first route used to transport the Vinho do Porto from its production site (about 100 km above) to Porto, where it was stored and ambered all around the world. Stories of shipwrecks are famous, in a river then wild, in which the barrels fell to the river and this one... More

Very disappointing trip, having previously taken an excellent cruise on the river Seine, I had high expectations The travel arrangements routing us through Munich on the outward journey, and Frankfurt on the return, turned a less than 3 hour flight into an 8 hour marathon The trip started with 2 days in the Hotel Tivoli in Lisbon, the hotel was... If you like Port, you'll like Porto. Visit the Port Houses, take a tour in one, we chose Calem, very interesting. Then sample different ports in other Port houses.

When you stroll around in Porto you can see the river from many places. The Douro is one of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, flowing from its source near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province across northern-central Spain and Portugal to its outlet at Porto.

We traveled from Porto to Provesende and up the Rio Douro to the most incredible landscapes of vineyards and olive orchards. There is a train from Porto at least once a day. From Provesende, one of the lovely stone villages in wine country, the train took only 1 hour. Colors and textures you won't forget.

It's one of the 'angriest' rivers I've ever seen and the guide who first took us there said that, back when wine transportation was done by small boats, a lot of people died because of its angry currents (in certain parts of the river, you can actually see one half of it going downstream towards the ocean while the other... The river between the two sides of Porto connected by Ponte Luis....What makes the view of the river beautiful is the colourful houses and buildings on the river bank....It also has a beautiful sunset views in the evening....to be enjoyed with a wine....

As i read about it, River Douro is one of the major rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, flowing from its source in the mountains in Soria Province across northern-central Spain and Portugal to its outlet at Porto. The Douro vinhateiro (winegrowing), an area of the Douro Valley in Portugal long devoted to vineyards has been designated by UNESCO as a... More

We experienced both the six bridges cruise and a day cruise to Regau with train back to Porto. Great to see the vines growing on the banks of the Douro. We passed though two locks, one of 12 metres in height with the other being 35 metres. For the more energetic there is a cycle path along the river to... More

Just head west from the river and enjoy the stroll and boardwalk maybe stopping for coffee along the way. Boats are for lazy people! Get the 500 bus back into Liberty Square for less than 2 euros if too tired to walk back. Sandy beaches and sunbathers await you and plenty of beachside cafes.
