At first sight the museum seems a bit worthy but dull; lots of pots and ancient stones! But go upstairs and you get a fascinating tour of what used to be a very grand Portuguese house. Three of the rooms have very beautiful tiled walls showing hunting and classical scene. Well worth a visit and only a few euros each.

Decorative Arts Museum. Originally the 17th century residence of a Catholic priest, then for over 2 centuries the "palace" of a local noble family, the city of Viana do Castelo repurposed the historic structure into a municipal museum, adding a modern wing.
With a fascinating temporary exhibition on "Stucco and Stucco Artsts," the museum's main exhibits include furnishings from the 17th-19th century and other artwork. No Portuguese collection of decorative arts is complete without azulejos (blue tile designs). Three rooms from the original palace that houses the museum covered unique themes: the Four Continents - Africa, Asia, Europe and South America; hunting; and palace living.

I m not sure if this the museum I have visited or there is another. The one I visited was an old bank and includes traditional clothes and tradition gold making. A must visit in Portugal

This Museum is large and more sophisticated than I expected. The painting on the pottery is amazing - human nature and the human condition comes shining through. The colours are bright. The depiction of animals is also wonderful.

the first floor of this museum is sort of less interesting but once you get up on the second floor they show fantastic tile pictures, Viana, once was a center for the manufacturing, besides those tile pictures it is the mansion as such which is very nicely restored and impressive

Free, small museum. The lower floor is two sparse rooms but their are delights waiting upstairs. If you are a fan of azulejos, blue painted tiles, you will be delighted. There are 5-6 rooms containing some beautifully ornate furniture and a tiny chapel. But the highlight is three rooms lined with stunning azulejos and some gruesome painting of hunting and dogfighting.

a small, compact, affordable view of Portuguese history. Do not miss it! Especially the Glasgow toilet!

I have no words to describe this city. Unfortunately we could not visit this museum, but the city, especially the monastery in the top of the hill will give you one of the best Portugal's land scape.

Be sure to go to the main entry ;; the backdoors show entry times, but remain closed ! All by all this museum is among the better "municipal museums" because it focuses on some aspects of its history: here particulary the so typical portuges "azuleijos" and pottery made in the town and surrounding area and also a lot of examples of imported pieces.
Further some good furniture examples and other art.

Compact museum that does local history brilliantly - from prehistory right the way through to modern times = especially good on pre-medieval development of area.
