The area
Neighbourhood: Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.

- JydeooLagos, Nigeria2,311 contributionsA Must-Visit: A Tranquil Spot with Breathtaking Views of AthensClimbing up Areopagus Hill required caution due to slippery stones. It's located near one of the entrances of the Acropolis and it overhangs the Ancient Agora as well as having a good view of the Hephaestus temple. Areopagus Hill is free to access and a tranquil spot to unwind, with nice views of Athens city on one side, the green area of Pnyx Hill on another, and the Acropolis on yet another side. I intended to explore more of the hill, but fatigue from earlier visits to ancient sites set in. It is one of the places I would like to go back to in Athens, with more time, a novel and a picnic pack.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 17 September 2023
- RazorfishLittle Rock, Arkansas5,287 contributionsMemorable visit to the AreopagusMy wife and I walked up the Areopagus after we exited the Acropolis. We sat on one of the rocks on the outcropping and took in the views of the Acropolis and the city of Athens. It was amazing to think that the Apostle Paul preached about the “Unknown God” on this site. I had heard about Mars Hill since I was a child. This rocky hill was not quite what I expected, but it was special to have been here and to have experienced the location.Visited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 September 2023
- elchacoHouston, Texas1,032 contributionsAmazingThe place itself is nothing amazing, just a rock you can climb and get great views of Athens and the Acropolis. To me, a Christian, standing in the same place the Apostle Paul gave his speech to the Athenians was truly amazing. I felt the presence of God in my heart, and that is what made this truly amazing.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2023
- StacyMacDonaldCalgary, Canada235 contributionsLovely and easy-access viewpointThis hill is a quick view point to add to your Acropolis day or, if you're staying nearby, to check out for sunrise or sunset. I recognize that it could be more important to some, given its religious and historical significance, but to others it offers lovely views of the city and the Acropolis. It's very quick to access from the main entrance to Acropolis, free, and has easy-access stairs. I do recommend good shoes if you want to wander more freely around the top--the rocks can be a little slippery.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 October 2023
- DallasRay259 contributionsAmazing site / risky walkI recommend coming here during the day and the evening. View of the Acropolis as well and the city were amazing. Because people have walked here for over 2,000 years, the rocks are very slippery and risky to walk on. I suggest you research Acts 17 before arriving. The Greeks called it Ares' Rock (or Areopagus) while the Romans called it Mars Hill. The both had their own names for the god of war. In the ancient world, civil and criminal trials were once held here but the philosophers also spoke here. Now for the shocking part: there are certain parts of the hill that has ancient pottery shards buried partially in the ground. I was surprised how many people walk on it without realizing what they were crushing. There is no charge to visit here. Look for the bronze plaque of Paul's sermon.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 3 November 2023
- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom937 contributionsIn the steps of St PaulWe stopped here as part of a Segway tour. Be aware that the top is incredibly slippery as the rock has been polished smooth by thousands of years of peoples feet. It is interesting for the connection to St Paul and for the incredible views across to the Acropolis and the city of Athens. Well worth the trip but watch your step.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- Mairwen1United Kingdom11,165 contributions#1 View of the AcropolisAeropagus Hill is not so much a hill as a large, rocky outcrop, just outside the Acropolis exit. From the top, you have an incredible view. This is probably the number 1 spot in Athens to view the Acropolis. Climbing it, is one of the great, free things to do in Athens. People are swarming all over it but it is worth noting that it is extremely slippery in places. Stairs have been carved into the rock but the bare marble rock has been worn smooth over the years and it’s easy to lose your footing. Aeropagus Hill has a long and interesting history. In ancient times, it was the meeting place for the Senate-like Council of Elders. Later it was the site of the Council of Nobles and the Judicial Court which dealt mainly with homicides. In 480 BC, the hill was used as a campsite by the Persians, when they were undertaking their siege of the Acropolis and in Biblical times, St Paul the Apostle preached his “Sermon on an Unknown God” here (Acts 17). A large brass plaque at the roadside commemorates the sermon.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsGreat View of the City and the AcropolisWe had intended on getting to the Acropolis when it opened but got distracted by this very tempting lookout. It is set just below the Acropolis and you can get great unobstructed views of the city below and it is a nice photo opportunity for the Acropolis as well. It is recommended to bring good shoes as the ground is uneven and the stone parts are smooth and sometimes slippery. Good shoes are recommended for the Acropolis as well. Our family spent about 20 minutes here before we spent around 2 hours checking out the Acropolis. It is best to get here early and be ready for some incline as the walk to get up here and around the Acropolis is quite hilly.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024

It’s windy, but an incredible view. Would recommend stopping for a bitVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024
- Baggio1018London, United Kingdom319 contributionsMore like a large rockFelt it was more like a large rock... Located near the Acropolis exit, climbing this rock offered an interesting view back up towards the Acropolis and down towards the ancient agora. A fairly easy climb as long as you are able bodied, perhaps the only challenging part is at the top where you need to navigate around people sitting along the easier paths or taking multiple selfies.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 May 2024

This is a Really Historic Rock that you can walk on. The view is very nice, although not as impressive as the Acropolis. Many people will sit here, look at the city, smoke, and drop their cigarette butts in indentations in the rock.
Christians will marvel that St Paul preached from this same rock. Many people may also wonder if St Paul lied or was actually inspired.
Note that Aeropagus and Mars Hill are the same ("Aero" refers to the god Mars, not to the air/view).
Wear good shoes! Centuries of tourists have worn the rock smooth in places.

We stopped here before making our way up to the Acropolis, and spent 10-15 minutes admiring the views of the city and Parthenon. Comfortable shoes with decent grip are needed to stray from the paved area and walk along the rocks. For me it was very special and humbling to stand where St Paul once preached, and think of how much has changed in the world since that time.

For fantastic views of the Acropolis, Parthenon and Athens city, you need to walk up Aeropagus hill. Reached via twenty or so steps, the views from the top of the rock are nothing short of breathtaking!
It was here where I discovered just how immensely huge Athens is. You get a clear view of the Acropolis, Lycabattus Hill, the city, the Temple of Hephaestus, the hill of muses and so much more.
For something to do which requires little effort and no money, look no further than this rock overlooking a spectacular city steeped in rich history.

Absolutely beautiful!
If you’re not with a tour guide and are self-guided, pay close attention or you’ll miss this spot.
The view is absolutely beautiful. I was just in Aw to had been/seen where the Apostle Paul gave his speech.

Wasn't expecting much when ascended the steps up to it, but ended up loving it here... became one of the highlights of the trip. A wonderful place to sit, especially if the sun is shining. Affords wonderful views. Just watch your step as it is so popular that the rocks have become polished and smooth - people were slipping.

I am going to Athens December 2019. I want to visit Mars Hill. I could not find a fee for admission. There is a post stating in 2015 that it is free. Can anyone tell me if this is still the case. Thank you
Written 4 July 2019
There is no fee to see or climb Mars Hill . When you are at the ticket booth,( for the Acropolis) , Mars Hill will be directly to your left, if you are facing the ticket booth. You only pay to climb up to see the Acropolis. I would recommend it, especially if you have never been. But don`t miss the view of the Acropolis from the climb to the top of Mars Hill.
