The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.

We hiked through the park 2 nights in a row to see this because this is right up our alley. However, when we arrived on both nights from our hotel (an hour away), we were told there was a private event. There was no sign the first night, so we walked to a secondary entrance through the park. The second night, we were turned away again and the guy said we could co.e back Monday for another show. There are no shows on Monday according to their website. There was no notice on their website, phone message (I called both days trying to get someone), or sign at the door. Very disappointing. I am sure it would have been a great show, but we saw nothing for 2 nights in a row. I am begging whoever runs the place to please communicate better. Not worth the effort.

I visited the Dora Stratou Greek Dances Theater on Thursday 18 July with my young children (all under 10 years old), my mother-in-law and husband. There were only approximately 100 persons in the 800+ theater (50 of whom were members of the Greek military who I believe were given free passes) and we were able to get seats in the very front row. Tickets cost E15 for adults, E5 for older children and free admission for younger children. I want to be clear that the dancing, costumes, music and choreography of most of the performance was fine. Unfortunately, during the middle of the performance two men who were dressed in folk costumes performed simulated sex as part of their skit. I don't want to be too graphic about the content of this sexual act, but it lasted for approximately five minutes and was of an especially sick and obscene nature that was completely inappropriate for young children... and I mean "completely" inappropriate! As we were seated in the front row, it was impossible to avoid and ruined what should have been a fun family evening about traditional Greek dancing.
Following the performance, I made contact with the management of the theater to discuss the suitability of this "skit" being included inside a performance of traditional Greek dancing. I made one simple request, namely to please include a warning to parents on their website when a performance is going to include simulated sex of a graphic nature between two men. Instead of attempting to address my concerns, the theater management showed no respect and dismissed my concerns as the view of "only a single individual's protest." Please feel free to contact me if you would like to see a copy of their full email response. Instead of treating my concerns seriously, the management proceeded to lecture me about how to educate my own preschool age children, saying that in his "opinion... there is absolutely no harm in talking about sex to children in a healthy way - and there is no better way than joking about it." How can you rationally argue with someone who insists on lecturing you about the suitability of a simulated sex act being performed in front of little children?
For that reason, I cannot recommend the Dora Stratou Theatre as it is not "family friendly" and may contain "adult material" that is completely out of character to the spirit of traditional Greek dance. Families such as mine came to the Dora Stratou Theatre to see traditional Greek dancing and not simulated sex between two men.

I have to agree with the other individual who rated the show as "terrible". In the almost 50 years that I have been living in Greece, I have always taken my guests to see a performance of the Dora Stratou Greek Dances, knowing how much it will be enjoyed. This time, one "dance" was enough to leave a very bad impression and in the future I will need to think twice before taking other guests to see a performance. I'm just grateful that my grandchildren stayed home that evening and that our guests were understanding. It's a shame that the theater is celebrating it's 60th year in a manner most unbecoming.

We were excited to take three other families along with us to what I expected to be a lovely night of Greek folk dancing and amazing hand made costumes.
The entire experience was ruined by one VERY vulgar skit which completely distracted from the dance routine. It was embarrassing to watch and horrible for our children and young adults - everyone in our group was shocked and appalled by the end of the skit!
It is really too bad that that is a part of the evening entertainment. I will not be returning, I will not send our visitors there and I will warn others about going there.
If it were not for that section, the rest of the dances are lovely and the costumes are colorful and interesting.

If you want an authentic look at Greek culture then come to the Dora Stratou Theater between May and September for a fabulous outdoor performance. The theater is located near the Acropolis behind the Filopapou Hill. it is in the midst of an olive grove and set down so that you feel that you are in the country. The stage looks like a village square and every seat in the theater offers a great view. The tickets are so reasonable at 15 Euros per seat and no reservations are needed. They change the program every 14 days so that they can feature all of the 1,000 dances in their repertoire over time. The live music is mesmerizing and very professional. The costumes are a feast for the eyes and above all the dancings is FABULOUS! Come, feel the energy and excitement and drink deep of Greek culture spanning generations and miles.
The funding has been cut back because of the crisis. Come and support what they are doing because it is important to keep this culture alive.
The evening was magical and you can bet I'll be back in May!
Don't miss it if you're in Athens at night.

The Dora Stratou Theatre is the Alpha and Omega regarding to traditional Greek dance.
Please note: if the performance is cancelled due to rain, take your tickets to the box office and ask them to validate them for another day so you can return to see the performance without paying again.

A wonderful Greek culture experience...live music, traditional regional dances and beautiful traditional costumes in an open air theatre. Great value for the cost - 15 Euro. If you go, take the path through the park to get to the theatre...spectacular sunset views. Take an extra layer for the cool evening air and a flashlight for the walk back. Lovely to see and hear such passion and joyful smiles/energy from the dancers and musicians.

The theater is at the top of the hill. Cost is 15 EURO per person. It was a great opportunity to see traditional Greek dancing. Also a great chance to see traditional Greek costumes. I think you would enjoy this if you were interested in dance or Greek culture/fashion.

This is a great cultural experience. The program is narrated in Greek, English and French. It is only 15€ per person as well. If you have never seen Greek dance before, you should visit while in Athens. It is best to hire a taxi to get to the theatre, as the taxi can drop you off right by the entrance. Doors open just past 8pm and the show runs until 10pm. This is a good event for individuals, couples and families.

Being a fashion designer myself, I have to say that I was mesmerised by these simply spectacular costumes. Their performances take place 5 times a week from the start of June until the end of September. There are 10 shows (covered in 2 weeks) that get repeated every fortnight. The shows cover costumes and corresponding dances from every region of Greece. The costumes are original antiques, maintained and preserved lovingly and astonishingly well. Dora Stratou has the largest Greek costume collection of its kind in the world. The theatre which owned by the foundation, sits at the foot of Philopapous hill, by the ancient Philopapous monument. It is an intimate and tranquil venue in the heart of historic Athens.
