The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Thissio / Makriyanni
Named after the well-preserved Thission (ancient temple of Hephaestus), Thissio is blessed with a small wooded park and some less frenetic streets that offer numerous quieter places to stay and eat. Largely pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou Street runs between the Acropolis and forested Filopappou Hill, well worth climbing for more great panoramas, until it merges with Dionysiou Areopagitou Street. This leads to the up-and-coming area of Makriyanni, whose centrepiece is the magnificent new Acropolis Museum. Opposite the museum is the entrance to the southern slopes of the Acropolis, while the eponymous metro station nearby is at the top of Makriyanni Street, another strip of touristic cafés and restaurants.

You will spend 3 hours walking around the centre of Athens and stop at various points. When you stop there is a puzzle that you have to solve there, and not only that there something interesting to look at and Charis (the guide) will tell you about the history of Athens too.

So basically you get your own private tour guide to show you some beautiful parts of Athens you may not otherwise visit, and you have great fun solving riddles at the same time.

We played the game as 2 adults so it is definitely not just a kids thing, though equally if you had young teenage kids I am sure they would love the experience too.

Charis is super friendly and well informed about what you are going to see. Highly recommended

Oliver and Claire are talented and quick-witted, extremely thorough and fast and made it to the end with flying colors. Definitely one of the best teams that ever played the hunt! Thank you for your participation, we had a great time together, hope to see you next time you visit Athens.

The Acropolis Treasure Hunt is a wonderful 3 hour experience, during which my teenage son and I walked c3.5km around the major sites surrounding the Acropolis, worked together to solve a series of entertaining and varying puzzles to progress to the next step, and learned much more than we expected along the way. It was a phenomenal way to spend half a day in Athens.

Charis was our wonderful host. She has invented this game and the puzzles within it, and has rendered it most professionally. Armed with the backpack of a missing Professor, and with the goal of locating him, we used a series of clues on a computer tablet, together with various items and artefacts within the backpack, to solve each puzzle and receive the location of the next puzzle.
As we strolled to the next site, Charis was a fount of knowledge about the area and its incredible history, and worked out what interested us. Her knowledge is formidable; her passion to share what she knows of Ancient Greece burns bright; and her empathy made it feel like a tailored and unique experience for us.

If escape rooms and puzzles interest you and you are looking for an unexpected and different way to learn the difference between your Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns, or how Spartans encoded messages, or why there were 6 obols to a drachma (does that constitute a spoiler?), as well as to see this place and learn of its extraordinary history, its gods, leaders, philosophers and artists, then Charis and her Acropolis Treasure Hunt might be for you.

Pictured are my son and Charis, our great host for the experience.
Note you do NOT go onto the Acropolis itself, but by the time you do, you will know a huge amount about it!

We had a lovely private tour with Charis and we just had the best time! The treasure hunt is a great idea of being interactive and also getting to know the main sightseeing spots. Charis gave us a lot of fun input during the tour even helping us with some greek vocabulary. We can highly recommend this experience. Charis went above and beyond making the tour special for us and even gave us some great tips on what else to do while staying in athen. Ευχαριστώ Charis 😉 Hopefully see you again some day!

We had an absolutely amazing time with this activity. We were two families and we have 2 children aged 10 and 11. The treasure hunt activity was incredibly well planned with bringing in some beautiful learning along with the treasure hunt activity. A great way for both our children and for us to learn. Charis, the event host, connected incredibly well with the children and with us, and was a pleasure to be with.

This was the perfect family tour. Our two teens enjoyed learning Greek history and discovering ruins while solving riddles and playing games. The adults loved it too! Charis is warm, friendly, extremely knowledgeable, and a superb guide.

An Acropolis Treasure Hunt? Yes, please!

What better way to explore the ancient sites that skirt the Hill of the Acropolis, engaging with history (and the intriguing traces of Greek we use in modern-day English)?

Similar in format to an outdoor “escape room”, this fictitious mystery of a missing archaeologist takes you on a walking exploration from one site to the next. You are given a bag of props at the start and, at each stop, there is a puzzle to solve. No need to feel intimidated if you aren’t a confident code-breaker: the puzzles are fun but not overly difficult. If you get stuck there is a game leader on hand to give you all the hints you might want. There was also a good variety of puzzles, so that everyone can have a chance to shine.

This treasure hunt was a great half-day out in the city. We played it as an adult couple, but it would be enjoyable for families with young children, too, or groups of friends. Especially recommended if you want to discover as much of ancient Greece as you can fit into your trip but have kids (or adults!) in your group who might grow bored with repeated museum visits.

An additional note: It was my partner’s first visit, while I had explored, researched and written about many of the sites on previous trips to Greece. Charis skilfully managed these different levels of background knowledge so that we both got to play an enjoyable game. She was a ray of sunshine and a fabulous game leader, generous with her knowledge about the history of the area. She was also very flexible with timing, accommodating our need to start and finish early to have plenty of time to get to Piraeus for the afternoon ferry.

Charis was an amazing guide! She was so good with the kids (9 - 12) and also kept the adults engaged with all her specialized knowledge. Highly recommend that you do this first, as someone else mentioned. This was money well spent for the kids AND the adults. Thank you, Charis and the Acroplis Treasure Hunt!

A great thank you to the team of the Acropolis Treasure Hunt because you helped to bond our team. We participated in the game as an organization looking for a team building activity and we enjoyed every minute of it. We learned a lot, there was something for everybody, even for native Greeks who are supposed to know their history. Go ahead and book a game!

This was a fantastic experience, and would be fun for all ages and groups.

We chose to do this as a team building exercise for our team and it was the perfect end to our retreat. The guide was well informed, helped us all enjoy our time together and learn about historic Athens with the challenge of cracking a few puzzles at the same time!

I would absolutely give this 5 stars and would highly recommend.
