The building is historical, because it was the private mansion of Heinrich Schlieman, the excavator of the prehistoric Homeric sies of Mycenae, Tiryns, Troy. This is where he lived with his wife Sofia and their two children. I like the garden cafe, right in the...More

Excellent collections, my favorite are the signets. The details on them are amazing. There is a cafe at the museum's small garden that also has jazz nights, do check it out.

Next to Syntagma Square, a museum that provides a great yard for coffee or beer, really graphical, should check it

As a collector of Classical coins this was a must see and certainly did not disappoint. The collection is fabulous, with a great overview of classical coins. The highlight thought was definitely the personal collection of Heinrich Schliemann, and a cheeky dekadrachm Owl!!

This museum is perhaps more for those who seek a deeper dive into the life of the ancient Mediterranean, but it has a lot more than coins to offer. First, the house is really cool (and centrally located) -- 19th century luxury built by Schliemann,...More

Have to admit up front that I have an interest in ancient Greek coins, so that is what got us to this museum in the first place. Plus it was on the way to the Lycabettus Funicular, coming from Syntagma Square, and that is an...More

Housed in a beautiful old mansion the Numismatic Museum has a fantastic collection of ancient Greek coins. I would think that most visitors of this museum would have a special interest in coinage as there are not other artifacts here.

The museum was nice , but what really excited us was the cafe. A really nice garden behind the museum , in between historic buildings. A must!

I have an interest in Ancient Greek coins and this museum has them all from every part of the Greek world 500bc onwards. A superb world-class collection that is unsung among the Athens museums. Also housed in Schliemann’s superb neo-classical mansion and Athens residence.

Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is
Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament
building on its upper side and surrounded by other
large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande
Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia
are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like
the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia
Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents,
