About
The National Garden is a relaxing oasis located in the heart of Athens. This tranquil park is filled with beautiful trees, various plants, and shaded walkways. Here, you can have a picnic, explore the small zoo or botanical museum, and watch the animals as they play in the ponds. There is even a play area for children. The garden is also a popular shortcut from the Panathenaic Stadium to Syntagma Square and is included in many tours like the hop-on-hop-off bus, and bike tours. Visit in the morning or late afternoon for cooler temperatures. – Tripadvisor

Great place for joggers. Certainly a family destination. A welcome respit destination.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 October 2023
- StacyMacDonaldCalgary, Canada235 contributionsLovely Athens Green SpaceMy partner and I love wandering parks while on vacation, and the National Garden is a nice spot to take a walk. Be sure to find the turtle "parthenon". There's also a massive nest of green parrots in the park near the zoo and water fountain.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 October 2023
- Liz M7 contributionsPeaceful haven on a hot or busy dayA treasure of a place especially in a hot day. Full of shade and greenery. Loads of places to sit, maybe picnic. Fantastic trees. Clearly very well cared for. Some fabulous quirky features like the Turtle Acropolis and wild goats in the tiny zoo. Check out the cafe where you sit under an arbour, especially their homemade ice cream. Only wish we'd been there earlier in the year when they served their olive oil ice cream.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Mairwen1United Kingdom11,213 contributionsLarge, Free Public Gardens in Centre of AthensFor tourists, the National Garden can easily be combined with other sightseeing. We started at Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, then crossed the road to the Gardens and followed the meandering paths past Zappeion Hall. We finished at Syntagma Square and the Greek Parliament where we watched the Changing of the Guard ceremony. This was a very efficient itinerary plan which packed an awful lot into a very short time. There are lots of lovely marble statues and busts scattered throughout the garden and several ponds, fountains and water features. One of the prettiest parts of the garden centres around Zappeion Hall. When we were there in June, a long avenue of jacarandas was out in full purple bloom. It was just stunning. The Gardens were commissioned by Queen Amalia in 1838 as a Royal Garden. Over 500 species of plants were imported as well as animals including peacocks, ducks, and turtles. Many of the plants didn’t last long in the harsh Greek climate and were replaced with more suitable plantings. However there have always been large oaks, cypress trees and date palms in the garden since it was first created. Entry to the Gardens is free.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 November 2023

- 1VictoriaTheTravelerSacramento, California768 contributionsBeautiful walk and peaceful locationI visited the National Garden Athens on December 5th while visiting Athens. I loved this location because it was a beautiful place to just walk around and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. There are tons of ponds, trees and statues to see. I would recommend as a great place to visit to get away from the city rush and take in a calm vibe.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 February 2024
- TWal1Canberra, Australia2,942 contributionsBeautiful Green SpaceOne thing that Athens lacks is green space. However, the National Garden is a small oasis in the centre of the city. The gardens are well maintained and there is plenty of shade, which is pleasant on a hot summer’s day. We visited in the early morning as part of a walking tour and there were few people in the area.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 February 2024

Much loved and used by lots of people, but it does not feel crowded because it is so large. The landscaping is varied and you can find some shade. Good for relaxing after a tour of the city.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 21 March 2024

We watched the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknown warrior in the mid afternoon sun so this was a wonderfully welcome retreat before cocktails and dinner. Lovey, go and see.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2024

I hate being down on Athens but come on Greece! The National Garden is one of the few examples where you can make Athens shine and you failed miserably! I'd more easily excuse the: raggedy looking park maintenance, tagged park benches, empty zoo exhibit enclosures with no explanation, exhibits that require water almost empty and others practically flooded, but when we were last in Athens pre--covid,we found the Parthenon (??!?!) similarly neglected (public bathrooms with broken toilets and rusty hardware), poor signage.
Even the other 'must see', The National Archeological Museum ', was closed on weekends and on weekdays closed at 2!.
For a country with so many treasures and tourist attractions it's as though you are trying to drive us all away...keep it up, this is the last time we will stop here before traveling onto a more functional Greek destination..

We enjoyed a grand stroll along the multitude of pleasant pathways. Lined with flora some of which still leafless it was a delightful afternoon.
In the centre is a fine lake with many ducks in residence. Further on is the remarkable Zappion Centre that is highly ornamented with many architectural design features.
There is no shortage of cafes and eateries and we had a delicious lunch in the busy one adjacent to the Zappion.

We always visit the parks in city centres and we are pleased we had a wander around.
There are a lot of shaded areas and if you’ve had a chance to pack or buy a picnic lunch this is a great place to stop n take a break.
There are plenty of seats to rest your feet and the sounds of the birds including parakeets lends itself to that mindful moment we all need when we are on a city break.
Unfortunately the large lake is currently being excavated/ upgraded so we couldn’t see this but there was plenty of other flora and fauna around. No rubbish being tossed on the pathways and no vagrants, we felt completely safe which was nice.

Only a short walk from Syntagma Square (nearest Metro), this wonderful park oasis in a predominantly urban city is a breath of fresh air. Nicely planned with easy to negotiate pathways, this was a nice break. We used it as a path from the Square to the Panathenaic Stadium and then took different paths back.
The types of plants were very similar to our home (Adelaide) and it felt a bit like home in a foreign city. Relaxing and beautiful.

The national garden is a real oasis in the busy city of Athens. You can relax without hearing cars or other vehicles. It is in the city center and close to several other sights in the city. In the park itself the highlights are the Zappeion (great yellow building In the middle of the park), turtles and geese which you can see in the north of the park, although the exhibit is a bit small, the beautiful trees including trees with kind of oranges (do not taste as good as normal ones) and the historic site on the western side. It is a beautiful park and I will definitely recommend to visit!

Free to everyone. It is right next to the Changing of the guard location. I recommend that you buy water and make sure you are well hydrated during summer time. There are many plants and trees to see. There is a play area for children. Enjoy the beautiful scenery and remember be respectful of the garden and animals who inhabit the place.

We tried to visit the National Garden last Saturday, 21 August 2021, only to find out that it was closed "as a precautionary measure, due to the risk of fire), i.e. due to the inability of local authorities to properly manage and protect it.
Only 2 of the 3 main gates had a paper notice alerting visitors about the closure.
We later found out that this has been the case throughout August 2021 (still a week later, as I'm writing this review).
Otherwise, the Garden offers a much welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle (and heat!) but it is perennially badly managed if not outright neglected

Peaceful place to relax, while waiting for something. Occasional breeze, plenty of shade and birds. The zoo is a few historic cages with a couple of goats and some caged pigeons and medium-sized birds. It's free.
The turtle pond is gross, with so many turtles they're like flies or something. Walk by, say "oh, how cute! Wait ... Ewww!" And then find somewhere else to relax from the trauma.

We (myself, daughter, grandson) visited the National Gardens in Athens just 2 weeks ago and it was a quiet and cool reprise from the traffic on the hot day. Trees, water features, and benches throughout were were very relaxing. The gardens were within walking distance of our hotel and were directly on the Red Bus circuit. And it was free!
I would have given 5 stars but the Zoo and Museum were either closed or we were just unable to find them. A large green fence stopped our progress when searching.

Hi,
I am planning to visit Athens and the National Garden and looking for a map of actual garden with possible key to the plants and statuary to down load. English preferably. I am interested in Botany. I cannot find one. Do yo know if they exist or do I have to take a tour from staff member? I find that local independent tourguides know little about the actual plants in the gardens.
Thanks

Perhaps you could go to the website for J. & A. N. Diomedes Botanic Garden website to get assistance or try to enlist a botany student from the University as a guide for the National Garden

Hi, does anyone know if the National Garden is open on Christmas and Boxing day ie 25th and 26th Dec?
Written 7 December 2018
It was open and the weather there was nice and lively. Just make sure you have a jacket on you because it's colder at that time of the year due to humidity. Seasonal greetings.

Has the garden been reopened? I know it was closed by police order June 14th and 15th

Hi Seraphina, I was at the National Garden at the end of May, so I don't know whether it's been reopened (and also hadn't heard that it had been closed). Changing of the guard nearby is fun just in case, as is the nearby Metro stop's exhibit of artifacts.
