With lots of local and tourist shops selling usual tourist rubbish. With assorted clothing shops and fabulous small excellent cafes and restaurants. Good food. Cheap eats and a good atmosphere. Well worth the visit. Sunday flea market a bit of a disappointment as was a lot smaller than described. Good fun and very friendly people that don't hassle you to... More

This a major stop on the Athens Metro Lines [1 & 3]... as well as a major low cost shopping area-- for both new and "recycled/second hand" goods. The square is very busy and also has many shops of all types as well as places to buy snacks, ice cream and meals. The flea market area is a short walk... More

A nice town but it does get very busy. The square has a really good icecream shop and is recommended. Loads of places to buy gifts or just to look around. The "Fea Market" is really just a long line of gift shops!!! If you walk to the end of the fea market street you come out alnon the edge... More

A number of reviewers stated the pickpocket issue; let's be honest, this is an issue no matter where you are, especially where there are large crowds/busy areas. Follow the normal precautions so you don't become a victim! Lots of shopping here for every one. If it isn't here, well good luck!

This is my second visit to Athens in less then 6 month, and this place would be my favorite , it would give you the right atmosphere to feel you are in Athens.

Beautiful market. Should be able to find gifts for everyone. Watch out for pickpocketers. Lots of migrants/refugees selling their products. Just say "no" firmly and keep walking if you are uninterested. I stayed there several hours. Its on the City Sightseeing tour bus line. Definitely a must see.

The Monastiraki district is full of both Greek dwellers and tourists, at the crossing between monuments areas (Greek and Roman agoras), food outlets, flea market, shopping areas and next to Vegetable and Meat markets. There is no way to miss the place during a visit of Athens downtown.

We had a great time walking around Monastiraki! There are many small shops with shoes clothes but also antiques. You could find some really nice cheap things if you have the time to look around! We found an amazing cafe/bar/gallery called TAF which is in Normanou street! We loved this place because of the cocktails and music! We also had... More

Such a buzzing place! A lot of nice shops and plenty of goodies to find. Interesting narrow streets and good rrstaurants. However, very busy and watch out for the people trying to talk to you and shake you for money.

Staying in Monastiraki

Neighbourhood Profile
Monastiraki
Monastiraki is a souvenir-hunting enclave with a difference. Apart from the dramatic backdrop of the Acropolis, its network of alleys and pedestrianized streets surround the remains of both the Greek and Roman agoras, adding the quaint concept that this is where the ancients also came to shop. Named after the tiny monastery church at its center, Monastiraki Square is a lively spot by day or night, with street peddlers vying for your attention to sell you nuts and sweets. Down beside the metro station, the official Flea Market is an unbroken row of souvenir shops until you come to antique-oriented Platia Avissinias, while Pandrossou Street on the other side of the square offers more tourist shopping. The pedestrianized street beside the Greek Agora is lined with cafés offering fine views.
