Everyone in Europe knows the Plaka - and everyone else as well. So I expected 200% tourist traps. But it was actually not too bad - some nice scenic places, "normal cafes". Maybe it gets worse in the summer, February was ok!

Came on a winter city break to explore the historical sites of Athens. Our hotel was near the Plaka region so we went there to eat and walked through during the day. It is a very pretty area with lovely buildings and streets with flowers and plants and in the evenings It is lit with fairy lights in places. Very... More

Touristy place. Definitely worth a visit as shops sells curios which are interesting to me. A few eating places were frequented by locals and kerbabs are grilled on site.

Plaka is definitely a great plce to wander around and get lost in Athens. It's small, charming streets, marvelous architecture and lots of small bars and restaurants make it an unforgettable experience. It's also a well known place for getting some souvenirs, but it's far more expensive than other places in Athens, therefore I would refrain from it.

A beautiful neighborhood with nice restaurants and stores. Worth taking a stroll, grabbing a glass of wine, and people watching.

Lovely, albeit a bit touristy. The vibe is nice, the restaurants and cafes are lovely. Easy to spend a few hours.

Staying in Plaka

Neighbourhood Profile
Plaka
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
