In 1964, the Hellenic State decided to found the War Museum, wishing to honor all those who fought for our country and its freedom. The design of the museum was undertaken by a team of distinguished scientists, headed by Professor Thoukidides Valentis of the National Technical university of Athens (N.T.U.A).On July 18, 1975, the President of the Hellenic Republic H.E. Constantine Tsatsos and the Minister of National Defense Evangelos Averof-Tositsas inaugurated the Museum. Its various activities include the publication of books, the establishment and maintenance of monuments and memorials and the aid to services and agencies all over Greece. The Museum’s exhibition areas are distributed over four levels (floors) and present images of Greek history from antiquity to the present.

My brother and I went to check out the museum because of all the positive reviews. We were very disappointed. The museum is outdated and not well curated. There were a couple of interesting pieces scattered throughout the exhibits but neither of us felt like we came away with a strong sense Greek military history due to the poorly organized... More

Very interesting museum, especially if you love different kinds of weapons and war stuff. Sadly there are no tanks in the museum, so we were a bit disappointed, but still the museum has many things to offer. It's 2 floors with many different items from different eras. There's even a Japanese samurai armor, a gift to the museum or something.... More

Very well organized exhibition covering all periods of country history and warfare. Lots of unique exponents, including uniform, awards and decorations, armament etc. There are also halls with animated movies showing the most important events (like battle of Marathon). Open air area contains not very much pieces, but all in good condition. Recommended.

I had little time on my way to airport. The outside has displays of air fighter and land machineries. The museum itself is nice to look at. Very close to Evangelismon metro station

Best €4 and 2 hours spent this trip. Fantastic array of displays both outside and inside. The aircraft and guns at the rear of the building outside were a particular favourite. Well worth a visit if you have the time.

My friend and I visited this museum today and ended up getting a tour from the director of the Museum! Everyone was very nice (they let me leave a suitcase at the front so I wouldn't have to drag it around) and the director gave us an amazing, informative tour! If you like history then I definitely would recommend this... More

Complete and big and interesting. Situated not far from Lycabettus and from metro station. Just a bit old fashion.
