Located in the old parliament building.
This museum can be a good beginning of discovering cultural Athens.
Start left side of entrance reception and make a round along the ground floor. Continue by taking stairs to the first floor.
There is no elevator, but there is a stair seat lift for anyone that has problems with stairs. Technique looks a bit aged though. But ground floor is sufficient for a first feel of Greece.
Restrooms are located in the basement. Walk stairs down and pass the old archives, a bit of a labyrinth until you finally arrive.
Very service minded and helpful personnel.
Free entrance on Sundays.
You may continue your first day of impressions by a walk to Syntagma square for looking at the new Parliament, behind which one finds the national gardens, worth a stroll, adds a bit of fresh air but no real culture. Follow up with a local meal and you have a nice, and not overloaded first Athens day. Having an ouzo at a terrace and watching people is also part of living the culture.

I enjoyed it but did think there would be more informative historical content. It’s well curated and nicely laid out, but, it’s only two floors with the bathrooms located in the basement. I thought it was also a tad bit overpriced at $15 euros, for what it was, respectively.

Really interesting museum in the heart of Athens. I found the exhibition on the Greek War of Independence fascinating. Includes the old Parliament chamber that has seen significant moments in Greek history.

This is a wonderful chance to visit a museum out of the written path!!! This is not a crowded place full of tourists. You will find it behind the exceptional and glorious statue of Theodore Kolokotronis, the national hero of the Greek Revolution 1821, a personality worth spending some time to read about. Anyway, the museum lies in the architectural gem of the Greek Old Parliament which is situated in a beautiful spot surrounded with pines and palm trees and four or five beautiful cafes and restaurants which I will describe later.
Inside the historical museum you will find art objects, weapons, important greek and european paintings from the ancient times up to the 20th century. What is important is that you can experience historical artifacts and documents of the middle ages, the franco - byzantine and venetian period, as well as the modern history of Greece.
Across the street we found beautiful antique shops and we actually did buy exceptional quality antiques from Tsantilis Antiques Store, in Omirou street. This store is one of the oldest antique shops in Athens, with authentic works of art, the owner was very helpful and with deep knowledge of history and art, he kindly gave us information about many unknown places to visit in Athens.
We ended up across the street, inside the shopping arcade, to Kentrikon Restaurant, one of the oldest restaurants in Athens where we did experience wonderful and quality greek cuisine. This is a place where local Athenians eat lunch. Try fish soup, chicken with greek spaggeti and tomato sauce, and finish with fresh fruits and creme caramel. If you want to continue your walk, grab a cappuccino from the store exactly beside Kentrikon restaurant. It was one of the best I have ever had.

The National Historical Museum is not far from Syntigma Square in Athens. Just ask for directions and plan to spend a good hour touting this museum. As a Greek-American I felt such pride in my heritage. The brochure characterizes itself as "The permanent exhibition of the National Historical Museum(NHM) consists of typical national relics. Displayed in chronological order , they illustrate the historical evolution of the Greek nation from the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 to WW2."
This museum is the old Parliament building of Athens. When you walk into the museum grab a guide to the various corridors and specific rooms. My favorite room was #4 and Corridor 8 "Philhellenes and which displayed the War of Independence 1821-1827. As some of you may know, the famous English poet, George Gordon, Lord Byron participated in helping these Greeks win this war. There is also portraits of the famous fighter, Kolokotronis. There are statues of Kolokotonis in Athens outside of this museum as well as Pireaus. There are Greek costumes throughout the museum. You will find an abundance of Greek flags, sculptures, medals, maps and fantastic paintings. This museum is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 to 2. Sunday is free admission. Don't miss this great historical museum. It will nicely tie everything together in your knowledge of Greece.

This was probably the least favorite museum I have ever been to. It is a teaching museum for bus loads of young steaming kids. Stay away if you are not local and save your euros. The exhibits are juvenile and ugly.

If you’re not accustomed to recent Greek history, this museum does a good job explaining it. You have artefacts from world war 1 & 2 and the museum houses typical Greek dresses, artillery, uniforms and even an old parliament setup. It’s a small museum so won’t take up more that 90 mins of your time!

This museum closes early about 3pm, so I went on my last day prior to heading to the airport. Entry was about 3 Euro's so cheap and I was given a leaflet to read and also a locker to put my bag. It's an interesting small museum but needs more English or an audio guide for people who can't read Greek, at least then we would know what you are looking at.

If you are potteried/marbled out by the Acropolis or the National Archeological museums, you can come and visit this much smaller one that focuses on the more recent history of Greece (from the fall of Constantinople (1453) to the second world war).
Through the exhibition of relics, works of art, weapons, personal items, costumes, maps etc, the visitor can follow the life and the developments of the nation during the Ottoman and Latin rule of Greek lands, the Greek War of Independence of 1821, the formation of the young Hellenic state, its growth, the Balkan wars, the Asia Minor war and the beginnings of World War Two, with the clash of Greece with Italy.
Also, are presented ethnographic views of Greek society, through the rich costume, jewelry and household items collection of the Museum.
The NHM permanent exhibition follows a path in the rooms surrounding the central meeting hall of the Old Parliament Building.
PS: It is free on sunday.
