The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Syntagma
Perhaps the best place to get your bearings is Syntagma Square, crowned by the imposing Parliament building on its upper side and surrounded by other large structures, such as the exclusive Hotel Grande Bretagne. The grand avenues that lead towards Omonia are also full of massive Neoclassical edifices like the Numismatic Museum and those around smaller Platia Kolokotroni. Here you will find lots of travel agents, bookshops and fashion shops, especially on Ermou Street. Just south of Syntagma Square, you can take a breather in the lush National Gardens, which extend into the grounds of the Zappeio palace and beyond to the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus.
How to get there
  • Syntagma • 2 min walk
  • Nomismatokopio • 4 min walk

Located in central Athens, this landmark is easy to find particularly if you are embarking on a walking tour. The station is busy with commuters in the early morning and late afternoon. Just be wary of dodgy characters.
The best thing about the station are the archaeological displays on the upper level. These help to tell the story of Ancient Athens - interesting.

We used this Metro station several times and it functions well. The underground area is very large so it never felt crowded, even though lots of people pass through it. A couple of lines come together here, so lots of transfers.

The most crowded Metro station in Athens. It connects Tram and metro. Also, on the medium floor, it has exhibitions all the time!

My mother and i were travelling from Keramikos station on Saturday 6th February around 9-10pm, we were stopped at Syntagma station to take another route back to our hotel when we were stopped by two station attendees one greek short older lady in her 50's and a greek man in his 40's. We were questioned about our ticket since we didn't realise we had to validate it from Keramikos station. The lady was so rude and abusive to us and demaned that we pay 42 euros each or they would take our passports from us as we hadn't validated our tickets. We explained to them that we did not realise that we had to do this and this was simply a mistake. We were then told to go to a room behind the ticket desk and questioned further by two other greek guides who looked like the greek police. Both my mother and i were in total shock as we didn't realise that the greek authorites can be this rude and abusive towards coloured people. This older lady kept shouting remarks of how stupid we were not to have validated our tickets. I thought this was utterly disgusting since we did not do anything wrong. I was so upset by this and started crying but nothing was done. We had no choice but to pay the 42 euros then leave the station. I will never return to Athens again and would like to inform everyone that to be careful when travelling by metro or by taxi and to watch out for this kind of behavior from the greek authorities. I will be reporting this incident to my local MP.

Arrived in Athens in the afternoon with my wife today. Looked at the metro map and it seems cheap and easy to get to our hotel.

While transferring at the syntagma station three men crowded the entrance when I was trying to enter the train, took two seconds to realize they weren't going in but my wife was already in. I had to push through then to get in and once the doors closed I immediately knew what had happened. They must have pick pocketed me. Sure enough, our passports were gone.

No security, staff or police around at all! I could have grabbed one of them and yelled and no one official would have helped. Luckily my wallet and phone was somewhere else.

Went through four cities in Italy without even feeling something close to this. This specific station is a hot zone. Beware and good luck!

This is a perfect spot to spend some time while in Athens.

The square itself is a haven from the bustling on the street and is ideal for sitting back and people watching as people cross through. On the corner is a kiosk if you wanted to get some snacks or cold drinks, including beers.

The Grande Bretagne Hotel is right there, cool to check out the lobby (and actually used the restroom here, very clean.) This is where the Nazi headquarters were in Athens during World War II.

The Parliament Building and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (changing of the guard ceremony once an hour) is across the street.

The subway station itself is a museum...from the top, you can look down and see the old city ruins below. Once inside the subway, walk around the perimeter to see the artifacts and even a mummified body in the walls. Towards the front of the station there are vendors selling (and giving free samples) of local delicacies....honey, chocolate, etc.

Syntagma metro station is an underground station on the Syntagma square. Syntagma square the last two decades has become the center of all public transportation. Before was the Omonia square.
Just below the Greek parliament syntagma station is the most convenient spot for every tourist. I use that station very often. It is clean, spacious and safe. Be careful not to forget validating your ticket. Many tired and forgetful tourists face big penalties. Contrary to the electric urban railway train stations, the Syntagma metro station you will find fewer beggars and pickpockets bar fat. The surveillance is much tighter.
It was ready in 2000 and its construction was a part of the 2004 Olympics games in Athens. It is a jewel in a city which is not very neat and clean.
Syntagma station - Acropolis station and Monastraki station is a triangle which prevent tourists from loosing their orientation.

There is nothing wrong with the infrastructure of the station, it is all standard and functional but BEWARE OF PICKPOCKETS! This was on July 31st, 2019 when my family decided to use the metro to get to the airport. I changed from Omonia station to Syntagma so that we can ride Line 3 the ATH, as soon as the train opened its doors, the massive crowd followed on, since my dad was holding our large suitcase he struggled to move it. Therefore, he became the target for pickpocketing, as a man prevented my dad from getting into the train. Somehow, the man may have had a companion that snatched the wallet from his back pocket and left. The authorities at the airport did not bother to help either. Please be vigilant and mindful about carrying crucial things with you, especially on Line 3.

Its the central station of Athens. When catching the train in from the airport (M3) line, we got off and changed trains and went on from there to Akropoli station.
The M3 and M2 lines cross at this station. It was fairly clean and there was a lot of police and station attendants around so it felt very safe.

Please take notice when leaving the station. We were walking up the steps toward the square when a handsome 28-30 year old man started to tell us we had dirt on our backs. He immediately pulled out of his backpack a fresh unopened pack of tissues to help clean the mess. Firstly I don't know any 28 year old male who carries neat tissue packs, secondly he was insistent on helping clean the back of my husband and my coat - usually one would give the tissue to either person of the couple to clean the others back. It was too intimate!!! My husband used a few greek words he knows but the guy didn't speak greek. We knew something wasn't right and holding our belongings close to our bodies told him to leave. He disappeared into the distance. There were no police to tell - obviously he knew this too. He had used liquid face make-up to squirt all over our backs. Easily cleaned with a machine cool wash. The next day when visiting the university and other museums I saw trails of beige on the steps leading up to the museums. Obviously a popular way to disorientate the tourist and pickpocket them while pretending to help clean their backs
