About
This 7-mile-long gorge once served as a route for allied soldiers to escape to Egypt during the Second World War. Today, Imbros Gorge is a popular and accessible hike, offering a low-difficulty alternative to the nearby Samaria Gorge. For a small entrance fee, you can journey the rocky, gently downward-sloping path, with the narrowest part of the gorge just over 6 feet wide. The hike can be completed in two to three hours, and you can catch a bus or taxi when you reach the end. It’s advisable to start your trek early morning before it gets oppressively hot. – Tripadvisor

A gorge hike with some great scenery
The Imbros Gorge is a cool hike. I would recommend parking near the Porofarago Restaurant and starting from there. We found a parking spot on a small road about a km before that by turning left in the village at the sign for the gorge. The path starts right where we parked. There is a $2.50 Euro charge to walk the gorge. We left around 10am and came across 3 busloads of hikers, mostly older, slower people. If you left earlier you might avoid them. We had to work to get around them as the path is fairly narrow. Some of the parts of the Gorge are quite stunning. There is a place to purchase water, coke, etc. about half way down. We walked down and back up in about 3 hours, including stopping to take pictures. Wear good hiking shoes or boots and there is lot of loose rocks and pebbles. After we drove to the Porofarago and had a beer and a bit to eat. Try their local sausages, very tasty. The Greek Salad was good as well.

    Stunning scenery
Beautiful walk. Took us 3 hours to get to the taxi part at the end. The beach was a further 7km. Take a few euros for a cool drink from the well half way down but pack plenty of snacks. Walking boots not essential - I wore good trainers.

Easy to do as long as you can drive to Imbros village
We settled on this rather than the more famous and longer Samaria Gorge, partly because of easier access by car, with an easy return by minibus back to the village, where it’s easy to park. Imbros village has a number of cafes and eating places. You can do the 10 km walk pretty comfortably in a few hours, with time for the beach later in the afternoon. PS On the way back you can stop off at the World War II museum at Askifou

Slightly off season, up and down again
We parked at the bottom of the gorge and walked up it, had a drink in the top tavern, then walked back down it again. All in all, about 4 hours total and 9 miles. Perfectly fine if you’re able bodied and of reasonable fitness. We walked on the 1st of May, roughly just as the tourist season gets underway and it was lovely and sunny still, with a cool breeze. Friendly taverna staff at the top and we had the place to ourselves. We wanted to avoid its larger, more famous cousin of Samaria and we are glad to have done so. We try to go in the opposite direction of tourists usually and seek out the ‘hidden gems’ whether that means going off season or taking ourselves to remote areas. Granted, as we were going up we were definitely against the flow and there was always a steady stream of people coming down that we had to pass and we rarely had the space to ourselves and we were one of only about 3 parties actually travelling up. However, on the way back (down), with it being mid-afternoon, we only crossed paths with three other families and we were able to fully enjoy and immerse ourselves in this beautiful landscape which is unfortunately another area that has fallen victim to tourism. It also felt easier and a lot faster having already been up. It’s a sight to behold, with the gorge narrowing and widening, an array of flora and fauna and a cute donkey about half way up which we assumed helps the transportation of the cafe goods. We also got to avoid all the slightly hair raising taxis that we saw and have seen talked about. I dread to think what it is like in peak season, not just for human numbers but for the heat too. I think we hit the nail on the head with our method and I’d implore other keen hikers to do the same thing!

    Lived up to expectations!
We visited the gorge on an organised trip. The relatively long coach journey to the gorge from our hotel was made enjoyable by our informative guide and the terrific views of the White Mountains on the way. The hike down the Imbros gorge took around 3 hours with a brief stop at the halfway point for a rest and refreshments. My parents who are in their 80’s accompanied us and managed the 750m descent perfectly well despite the uneven terrain. (They are very fit for their age). There is much to enjoy including the stunning geology, and the marvellous flora and fauna. Obviously given its popularity there are moments when the trek feels a bit like a procession but never oppressively so. We rewarded ourselves with a beer at the Taverna Komitades after exiting the gorge. Our coach trip finished with a stop in the nearby village of Sfakia and an opportunity for a swim on Vrisi beach.

Amazing hike - go prepared !!
You must be in DECENT shape and mobile for this hike. We are a very fit couple and this was no problem for us. I booked this tour at the last minute and I only went with sneakers (no hiking boots or proper athletic trainers). You really have to be careful because there are a lot of hazards and I am one to roll my ankle in almost any precarious situation. Thankfully, I was fine. Hike was top to bottom - all downhill! The hike took us just under 2hrs but we did not stop at all. There is a lot of beauty but you have to stop and take it all in. For me, I was so concentrated on looking down so I wouldn't trip. Not many people seem to address this issue. We had one lady on our tour who ended up needing assistance possibly due to dehydration and the altitude. She had to taxi to the next meeting point as our bus had to leave. Our tour picked us up in Chania at 9am ish and we were on the tour by 10:15am.

    Impressive Imbros gorge
Our superb guide Thomas led us through breathtaking locations such as airplane stenada and the xepitira arch. The walls of the gorge are less than 2 metres apart and tower 300m above. At the end we were bussed to Chora Sfakion village to find well earned refreshments.

    Intermediate Hike Down a Gorge
Imbros Gorge is pretty, but more intermediate than easy. It's 6K all downhill and 1K along the riverbed. It is very hard on the knees and I wouldn't recommend for anyone with knee issues. That being said, it is pretty with light filtering in. We went with a bus load of 54, but it was not crowded. Everyone went at their own pace and you were often able to enjoy it mostly by yourself. Although "guided", the guide just stayed in the back (we never actually saw her except at beginning and end) but was there if needed. The trail of rocks was well-maintained. But it was a trail of large rocks and you were constantly looking down so as not to trip and fall. The guide provided great info on the bus ride. We made one more stop at a beach. Since I've done it, I would not go again, but I would recommend it for the physically fit and families with kids 8+.

    Nice, moderate hike
This is a nice hike but be prepared that it is a steady downhill at reasonable pitch, navigating loose rock of varying sizes the entire way. I used a hiking pole for the first time and was really glad I did. I felt the same way as some others have said that I didn't get to fully enjoy the surroundings because you need to be watching your footing constantly. We were on the trail at 9:15 am and only encountered one other couple while on the trail and another one at the exit, so didn't have the "traffic" issues others have talked about. I can't imagine elderly people on this hike - even my 18 year son felt it in his knee!

Don't miss it, a great taster if you're thinking of Samaria and much more family friendly as a shorter, 3hr trip
A great walk, all gradual downhill, completed in around 3 hrs. There's a watering hole around half way down where you can buy a soda and a energy bar, along with some very basic (squat) toilets. We arrived at around 10am, parking at Porofarago then walking down the sign written path to access the Gorge and pay our €3 per person charge (keep the receipt, there's another booth at the end of the walk that will ask for them). Parking at Porofarago was on the road side and there was no charge (ideally though stop and have a drink there before or after). The path is very well maintained and marked out (only one way really to go) and the high canyon walls afford plenty of shaded areas to get a break from the sun. Note though that around the end of the walk the sun will be directly overhead, so either leave a bit earlier or just be prepared for that warmth. There is a taxi at the end of the Gorge, though I had read here that could mean sitting in the back of an open backed truck for the drive back up (it's twisty, steel and if you've ever sat in the back of an open truck, on metal, in heat, you'll know it's not grey. We carried on to the taverna clearly sign posted, grabbed a drink then caught an air conditioned mini van back to our parking space. €7 each for that but very worth it!

Me and family including a 7yr old boy and a 9yr old girl had a lovely morning 3hr hike. It was still very impressive as we did this before the Samaria Gorge. It’s fairly flat but more rocky and no water refill station. It’s less shady so best to start early to avoid the sun at mid day. At the end there’s a cafe and car ride back to the entrance for 5 euros per person. Entrance fee is 3 euros. Great half day activity with small children.

Great hike, though very rocky. It's about an 8km walk downhill from Imbros (if you're driving here from Chania you'll encounter lots of twisty roads, some through small villages and at times stuck behind other vehicles). There was nobody at the guard/information hut so we didn't pay the entry fee until we reached the other end - only 2.50 euro per person. The route is pretty easy to follow and it's just about impossible to diverge from the main track. At the bottom, exit onto the road to find some cafes or restaurants. We went to the Taverna Komitades for a drink and a snack and to use the restroom before hiking back up the gorge (you needn't pay again to go back up - just show your tickets). Although this was more cardio than coming down, we did it in less time as our footing was surer. Definitely recommend going both ways if you can.

The entrance of the gorge is surounded by cafés that offer free parking (must consume stgh at least the way back).
Start early, like 8am. the path will be free of people, no one in your pictures or in your way. After 10am, the crowds start.
The path is not difficulte, but wear apropriate shoes for hiking, it will prevent you to step wrong and hurt yourself.
It's 8km one way. and if you don't want to go back hiking, there are planty taxis (5€ per person) to take you back to imbros.
Average people take 2h one way. I took 1:30h each way in a good speed.

The walk itself is c 2.5 hrs and we did it with an 11, 8 and 7 year old. It’s small rocks/scree the entire way and trainers are required at a minimum. It’s a pleasant enough walk but beware the dodgy tavern at the bottom.

We stopped at the bottom for a drink and we’re told it was 5eur for the bus or 7 for the taxi. Despite arriving there first they bundled another group on to the taxi before us, so we paid 5 eur for the bus to the very charming girl at the tavern, then we’re told for an extra 10 eur we could get the next taxi which would arrive in 5 minutes.

Then the bus arrives and we are told actually we can get the bus all along - once we asked for the 10 eur back the driver and the tavern woman suddenly forget how to speak English and get very aggressive. A German couple on the bus with us got the same treatment.

After threatening to not take us back up they reluctantly gave everyone back the money they had overcharged - but I’m assuming this is a regular scam they run….

We booked the trip through top travel (30E/person) and were taken to the entrance of the gorge(2.50E/person) starting at the top and walking down. We are 3 fit adults ages (32, 72, 73) with some ailments and the walk took us just under 3 hours. Take proper walking shoes and sticks would also be useful. I would not call it an easy walk...you are walking on rocks and large stones for the entire time and have to watch your footing and navigate your way down, there are some sections where you can find an easier path through. We kept a steady pace and stopped for photos and a couple of minutes rest. The scenery was amazing, the gorge incredible and we even saw some kri kri up close. Take the time to look behind you and enjoy the colours and height of the gorge.
Some people were running down, rushing through...I suspect they didn't see much and could have easily had an accident.

Overall it was definitely worth the effort! Our trip finished with a couple of hours at chora skafion before we made the return journey...and going back up in the coach was breathtaking.

Beautiful!!!
We hiked this gorge completely from the top to the bottom and the formations of rocks and sights kept us saying 'wow' every minute. There is a beautiful formation of a halo-shaped rock at the end on the right side whom makes it more than worth to hike the entire 8km. '

Make sure to wear hiking boots as the paths are rough and I would not recommend the hike if you're afraid of goats because they are on the path sometimes or even in the trees. Never seen anything like that. Funny to see.

We have stayed in the charming sleepy village of Imbros for the last two summers. The locals are extremely friendly and welcoming. "Giannis", owner of the Imbros Village Taverna is a local sheep farmer and the lamb he serves has been reared on the picturesque slopes of the surrounding mountains - it is truly excellent! Don't pay the extortionate prices for the same meat in Chania, eat here, at the source, where he also brews the smoothest Raki on the island. The gorge is a lovely walk, but I can't emphasise enough, take your time and stop for a drink and a bite to eat at Imbros village. It truly is one of Crete's hidden gems, a place where time stands still.

Very easy walk along this small gorge. The difficulty has nothing to do with the Samaria Gorge, so if you are a beginner and want to try this, don't be afraid! There are way less people, and no water points. I recommend hiking shoes and if you have the trekking sticks they could be useful (but they were not necessary). The path few kilometers and we needed 1:50 hours, instead of the 2-3 which are recommended. At some point the gorge is so strict that you can touch both sides with your hands! I really recommend it. You can take the bus to Imbros starting from Chora Sfakion, and then another bus at the end in Komitades back to Chora Sfakion (or Frangokastelo, if you are staying there).

The Imbros Gorge walk was on our itinerary when we were touring around Crete.
After some research we decided to start at the top and walk about three quarters of the route and then turn around and walk back up again.
This meant that we could leave the car at the start and avoid having to wait for a taxi at the end of the walk.
It's not a difficult walk. In fact the hardest part was walking downhill at the start to reach the toll booth. I saw a women fall here and she didn't actually start the walk!
Otherwise it's a very pleasant walk with some great scenery.
At one point it's so narrow that my husband could touch both sides with his arms out stretched ( a good picture opportunity!)
Best to start early morning when it's not too hot. By the time we were walking back uphill it was pretty quiet.

The hike itself was nice, took about 2.5 hrs with a 5 & 10 year old. The whole path is rocky which made it difficult for kids. So I wouldn’t recommend for young kids.
The downfall was the end of the hike, it turned dodgy and unsettling. When you get to the end, a 13 yr old girl stops you to tell you that you either walk all the way back or get a bus, 5 euro each. So we said bus along with others waiting. There were 3 guys who only speak in greek were with her.
They got some of us to climb to back of a ute. He drove for 5 mins then got us to climb down and go to a parked van. They drove us back to the stop. They loaded everyone in van, ute and a car, then drove us 20 mins to our cars. This all happening while they scream in greek to each other and us tourists had no idea what was happening.
Honestly it was shocking that this happened we felt uneasy and as if we were in some trap. People have to be informed of this before doing the hike! I dont understand how forums dont tell you this!
