The cathedral, an elegant stone building dating from venetian rule, is off Halidon Street, and you will pass it as you walk to the Venetian Harbour. During Turkish rule it became a soap factory, and the interior now dates from the latter part of the...More

Chania is a mix of cultures - this small but beautiful cathedral echoes the venetian era and traders. Better to visit in the day as its difficult to take in the splendour in the evenings. Hugely ornate.

We popped in here when we were in Chania and were very impressed with the interior. It is not like any church I have been in before. The seating is a first for me! Well worth a wee visit.

Quite fornominally ornate and filled with holy treasures, the cathedral is a place to visit and contemplate life, away from the heat and hurly burly of the old town. Not particularly large, it has many icons of the saints and sliver and gold relics for...More

Nice place for a moment of prayer and reflection. The church is interesting in its facade and charming in the interior. Not to be missed.

Just visit the place on the inside. the frescoes are impressive and it Is not the usual Byzantine style. I was lucky to follow mass on Good Friday and the Byzantine choir was angelic.

This is a beautiful and unusual church. It was built on the site of an older temple for Mary. When the city was occupied by the Turks in 1645 it was converted to a soap-factory. It was changed back to a Basilica in 1860. Small...More
