To learn about the heart and soul of Heraklion, its rich history, and all the ups and downs that make it the most populous city on the island, this museum is a must.

This is not a huge museum but it is a very good one, beginning with an extensive and intensive history of Crete (which is complicated and important to know the outlines of in order to understand the exhibits). Every room is carefully planned, and the...More

They have a great job in this museum. In the winter time, the first Sunday of every month is free. I can recommend the cafe inside as well, with a great brunch at the weekends.

The museum is well presented, and covers a huge historical range, giving a good overview of Cretan history. We found that it probably tries to cover too much, and that parts, such as the Second World War section, left us wanting more.

You get a nicely arranged presentation of the history of Crete, which differs from the rest of Greece. All texts are also in English.
