Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This church was built in the early 17th century, on the site of an earlier Byzantine church that was destroyed by an earthquake.
This church houses a collection of icons, including major works of the Cretan school.
Unfortunately, there is no descriptions / explanations for these treasures.

This is a real gem off the beaten path.

Definately worth a visit this church. Is in the city centre near the Agios Minas Church. So peaceful place.

Not the easiest church to fond in the labyrinthine streets of Heraklion old town but well worth the effort. In fact there are three churches in one! This means that under the same roof there are three separate altars dedicated to three saints. But overall the church is known as Saint Matthew's.

The Orthodox Church of Agios Mattheos (St. Matthew) of Sinai was built in 1508 on the ruins of an earlier Byzantine church. This was the main Christian temple after the conquest of Crete by the Turks.
Today there is an exhibition of icons which includes important works of the famous Cretan School of Iconography (Venetian Era),
Very beautiful and worth the effort.

You'll be walking into history, and see this on a walking tour with Urban Adventures - you'll see where some very influential people are laid to rest, as well as the beautiful art work within. Find out how they called you to church when it was not allowed!! A definite must see, not the big one, but so quiet and peaceful.

This is a hidden secret. Most of the churches you will see in Heraklion are large and flashy. This is pretty small but it has huge atmosphere! You step back in time here and are unlikely to see another tourist!
