- Andrea S4 contributionsNovember feast day at the Panormitis MonasteryIf you happen to be in Symi 8-9 November then you will be able to attend the big feast day celebrations at this monastery and you certainly should. Buses run from Symi town on the hour (ish) from 7.30am - stopping just beyond Pantellis restaurant. We bought tickets (10e return) for the 10am bus at 9am and got to the monastery just in time to see the procession of the St Michael the Archangel icon to the war memorial and hear the “cannon” blasts. It’s very impressive but also laid back and chaotic! We jumped right on a bus back to Symi town at about 2.30’without any wait (having visited the icon, bought delicious pastries at the tiny bakery and witnessed the huge Dodecanese ferry perform a full circle in the bay while sounding its horn and being serenaded by the monastery bells). The whole area is packed with people from all over Greece. This was an experience not to be missed (the bus ride through the mountains is also extremely fun).Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- chris hatwoodYate, United Kingdom52 contributionsBeautiful little placeArriving by boat the place honestly looked like a model village. Nobody was about and the place looked so clean and still! A bell chorus to honour our arrival and departure was lovely. The place itself is beautiful and quaint! We really enjoyed our brief stayVisited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 April 2024

The monastery has a museum and a church, including the famous icon of the patron saint of the island and sailors - Michael the Archangel. Pilgrimages come from all over Greece to the icon of Taksiarchis as the archangel Michael is commonly called in Greece. Noteworthy are the richly decorated iconostasis and 18th-century frescoes on the walls, painted by local artists, the Karakosti brothers. The interior of the church is filled with various votive offerings left here by sailors and fishermen in gratitude for their safe return home.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 July 2024

- Nesligül DIstanbul, Türkiye6,623 contributionsImpressive MonasteryThere are two ways you can visit this monastery, to take a midibus from Symi or by the sea. We took the Poseidon Trip and our first stop after an hour on a wavy sea. The huge monastery looks beautiful from the outside and has a holy church which has beautiful religious paintings inside. Worshippers clean and sweep the holy icon inside. The belltower is very ornate and pretty. The monastery was originally built in the 18th century and is still used by monks. There is a museum inside too but we didn’t visit it. There is a small coffee shop where you can buy food and drinks. Public toilets are quite bad, the squatting type with no paper, so bring your own. Fortunately there is water and soap. I would recommend a visit to this impressive monastery.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 September 2024

How do I get to the monastery from Symi?
1. The best way is via cab. Cabs are available along the Symi harbor - at cab stands. There seems to be only a few cabs though.
2. My cab driver - the excellent Yiannis - charged me 55 euros total: 30 minute drive to monastery, wait at the monastery for one hour and 30 minutes drive back. Two hours is all one needs and the drive is lovely.
3. It takes only about 30 minutes to 1 hour to see the small monastery. There is one large art room/building (free) and one museum (charging 3 suros)
4. The complex seems larger as it contains a hotel, restaurants and so on.
5. I saw no boat tours from Symi. Note: Tourist boats arrive from other islands at the monastery. When I visited a boat with 200 had just landed to check out the monastery. I guess you could rent a car, but why bother?
Overall, a positive experience with some beautiful religious art.

Spending a long weekend in Symi and thought we should at least visit here as everyone mentioned it as a place of interest. Drove from Gialos which although only about 12 miles took about 45 minutes due to the winding roads up and down the hills.
We didn’t get the stunning view of it as we approached as some have mentioned because of not arriving by boat. It was pretty quiet when we visited and the monastery was lovely but we only spent 10 minutes inside then had a drink at the outdoor cafe. The Wood Oven had nice pasties and this was definitely worth a visit. The toilets are squat ones so be prepared.

Took the trip to the Monastery through Symi tours in Symi town and they even picked us up from our hotel in Pedi with a visit to Marathounta Beach all for the price of €12.50pp
Lovely drive up the the hills and down into Panormitis, it takes only about 30 mins
Nice Monastery in a little complex with a museum and shop.
30 mins is plenty of time to have a look around.
Allow another 30 minutes for a drink and a snack perhaps at the cafe next door.

If you only have few hours in Symi as day trippers, this is a must stop place to visit besides some beautiful beaches. Beautiful architecture and what a great place to visit. We love this side of Symi. We would skip spending too much time at the Gialos harbour in the other side of island to stay away from the shops and tourists foreigner bars. This side feels a lot more tranquil and clean. Gialos is too disappointing and people do not practice safe distance and wear masks at restaurants and bars as they should have. We don't feel safe on that side. Panomitis is a pure gem!

We went to Panormitis from Symi town, bus cost €10 each. Given it’s importance to Symi and the fact that it may be the only big of sightseeing you do on the island, we thought it was worth the visit!
It’s pretty and small, you don’t need more than an hour there. Re modesty - it’s advised for women to cover knees and shoulders, but this isn’t strictly enforced. There is a local woman at the entrance handing out covers for women she deems unsuitably dressed, but you can ignore her and tell her no, as it is not an issue inside … many women rightly said to her “god is not looking at my legs”

We didn’t really visit the monastery itself, but spent the night on our sailboat in this charming little bay on Symi island. The sunset was spectacular. We had a great dinner at the only restaurant in town, next to the monastery, and next morning bought delicious breads and pastries at the bakery. Wonderful to hear the bells from the monastery as well as the church service they transmit through a loudspeaker.

Majestic church, part of a monastery dedicated to Archangel Michael. It was built in 1783. The elaborate iconostasis is all hand carved in the 17th century and it took the artist 10 years to complete. The paintings are also from the same era.

Are rooms still available for a night? Has anyone stayed recently? If so,how did you reach someone to secure a room?

Can't answer that question because we only stayed a few hours and I never inquired about staying over night!

Bonjour Greg,
bien cordialement,
Valérie

Is there still a room open to the public displaying the prayers and artifices that have been washed up on their shores from all over the world?

If staying on Symi , can you get to monastery by bus and what's best time to visit to avoid the swarms of day trippers ?
Written 5 June 2017
Yes you can but its not widely advertised. There is a turquoise Parormitis Travel minibus that leaves Yialos at 10.30am from where the Pedi bus stops/starts and I think it goes around 2pm also. There may be an even earlier bus - you can ask the driver if you see him. It doesnt stay at the monastery very long returning at 12noon and around 3.20pm. Not a lot to do in that area if you catch the morning bus and wait till the afternoon return.
Or alternatively there is a Symi Travel bus which is a paler blue and also leaves at the same time as Panormitis Travel. We caught the Symi Travel bus (by mistake when we flagged it down up in Chorio) and returned by the Panormitis bus at noon. The Symi Travel bus did stop a couple of times for passengers to take photos on the way. We were worried that we were on the Symi Travel day excursion which then goes off to a beach for several hours which we didnt want hence why we got the Panormitis Travel bus back but we would have been OK as the Symi Travel bus was returning at 1pm so a little longer visit. Symi Travel do a full day excursion with this and other parts of the island on certain days - you can ask in their office.
We unfortunately arrived just as the second of the large ferries was docking so really busy - however the ferries only wait about half an hour then leave so not too bad. We walked around a bit before going in the monastery just as the ferries were leaving so quieter. Not sure if going in the afternoon would be better if no ferries call in at that time. Not sure also if some days the ferries dont call in there first - we went on a Monday. Also the ferry timetables vary during the season so sorry cant be sure about the day trippers.
The cost of the bus was 6 euros return.

Ciao. Dicono, che si può essere ospitati nel monastero ,se si vuol fare dei giorni in preghiera e devozione( con un offerta al monastero) come è possibile prenotare una stanza... e quando si può andare?? Grazie mille per l info che potete darmi.
Danilo.

Ciao Danilo,leggo soltanto adesso e me ne dispiaccio;
non saprei darti queste info piuttosto se decidi di essere ospite del monastero non ci andare quando è il periodo della transumanza vacanziera di frotte di turisti con la macchina a tracolla,ne saresti poi terribilmente pentito.a presto e fammi sapere se vai.
