One of the best

One of the best monasteries to visit in Chios island. Well kept and in function. It has a nice history behind.

Nea Moni is worth the drive. The road is rough especially when you near the monastery. We were there off season and it was quiet and eerie. We walked through the monastery seeing very few people. The grounds are lovely as is the church with its Byzantine art.

Nea Moni, an 11th-century monastery, is in a remote setting within the mountains and about fifteen kilometres from the town of Chios. You may see a few locals there as it is still a working church, but separate from the museum. With limited opening hours until midday and re-opening around 4PM, ensure you plan your visit. As with many monasteries,... More

New Moni is the oldest monastery in Chios and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's route is little bit tough and near to Avgonima. You can visit both of them.

Not the biggest monastery in the world, but its history, the landscape in which it sits, and the quality and philosophy of the restoration makes this a must-see. It is a World Heritage site - but it is also a working church and as such it is free to enter. You only have to pay to visit the museum and... More

Twice, I visited this place and never got to see inside as they close at 3 pm I was told. It's quite a drive up on the mountains and make sure you take water with you! Along the way, my husband and I enjoyed the scene, serenity and nature. We rented an ATV at the port and enjoyed our ride... More

One of the treasures of the island of Chios for those interested in Byzantine art. The location can really only be reached by rented car from chaos and the trip takes about 30 minutes. A lot of restoration work has gone into the church but the monks cells are in bad need of restoration. The refractory where the monks ate... More

A fantastic medieval monastery built according to the architecture of Agia Sofia creates a peaceful scenery, but only the central section is well preserved. The rest is just deserted. Be aware: The museum is open until noon.
