If you have any interest in Byzantine history, do not miss this site. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes (tennis, hiking...).

Significant ruins with stunning views overlooking valley. May not be appropriate for those with mobility impairments. Steep climbs and very rocky. No handbars. Can park at lower and upper towns but must climb to castle at the very top.

This is the most fabulous Byzantine site with a lot to see. The Palace is currently under restoration and inaccessible but just the view of it is amazing. Monasteries and Churches contain wonderful treasures and the number of buildings is totally impressive. Allow at least...More

Fantastic Byzantine site. Get there nice and early as not too much shade on the site but there are frequent water points. Beautiful atmospheric set of churches and other Byzantine buildings set on the hills overlooking Sparta.

Mystras is an extraordinary place, any way you look at it. Essentially it is a sort of Byzantine site, as the remains are mostly related to that era. Many churches and monasteries in the Byzantine style, and castles dating from the Byzantine times. The site...More

There is a public bus from Sparta that goes to very close to mystras. A taxi wasn't too expensive and took us all the way to the top entrance. That have us more flexibility to catch a bus from Sparta to our next destination... More
