About
Budolfi Cathedral is placed on the highest spot in the old Aalborg between the old highstreet Algade and Gammeltorv. Its snow white facade gives the cathedral a exalted expression even though its actually the smallest of its kind i Denmark. Budolfi is named after the english munk and saint, St. Bodolfus, who lived in the 700s, and was praised as a protector of travellers. Budolfi Cathedral has always played a big part in the history of Aalborg which is shown in the crest of Aalborg, which shows three church towers, whereas one is Budolfi. The other two is the Church of Our Lady Kirke and Aalborg Abbey Church. One of the reasons why Budolfi stands out is its amazing carillon which plays every hour from 8am to 10pm. The specific music is changed during the year, making it fit the different holidays and occasions. The melodies is controlled by a computer but can also be operated manually. The carillon has exsisted since 1934 but the 48 bells present today were made by the Dutch company Petit and Fritsen in 1970. The biggest bell weighs about 1250 kilos whereas the total weight of the carillon is 16 ton.

A famous and old Cathedral in Aalborg. The best part was the old, painted ceiling, right in the entry way. We didn't spend a whole lot of time here, but it was right next to the underground ruins of an old Franciscan friary (from street level, all you can see is an elevator) we were going to visit, and it is an important part of Aalborg's history.

A very 'busy' style of architecture. Not a plain wall on the place. Near the middle of town and worth a stroll by. (I couldn't get in the afternoon I was there not sure why it was locked up but still impressive).

This striking cathedral can be found not far from the main hub of Aalborg city centre. Impressive and named after Saint Botolph, an abbott of Anglo-Saxon origin. Lots of redevelopment and repaving of the roads surrounding it’s entrance, so exterior views only possible at this time sadly.

This church is probably the most important building in the skyline of Aalborg. Anywhere in the city this one rises above the rest in the views.

The simplicity of the interior design is a great example of a lutherian church. The church was expanded during the second world war, which is barely noticeable, but look at the altar.

Although the Gothic Budolfi Cathedral is not very large, it makes a striking statement due to its gleaming white bricks. The current cathedral replaced earlier structures in the late 14th century. In the interior the organ stands out and is still in working order. It was installed in the 18th century but has a Baroque look about it.

Even if not going inside, it is still beautiful to admire it from the outside and the history is interesting, too. It is named for a 650 AD Benedictine monk (English) who is known as St. Botolph.
During the reformation in the mid-1500's, it became Lutheran. There is physical evidence of a church having sat on this site from as far back as the 1000's. The present church dates back to the 1400's.

Went on here on a relaxing stroll around Aalborg, what an amazing building.
It's striking from the outside and overlooks a lovely little cobbled square. Inside it was so wonderfully well kept. The artefacts, the pews, the pulpit were all a joy to behold.
Well worth a visit whether you share the faith or not, just on an architectural basis it's well worth seeing - especially the ceiling in the entrance way.

This stone church having been rebuilt several times is 800 years old. It is a combination of austerity and splendidly ornate paintings and statuary. It is marked by a magnificent clock in the tower. It has served as a place of worship for Catholics and then Protestants.
