The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

I didn't know I was interested in sculpture until we visited the Thorvaldsen museum on our honeymoon. Now, 52 years later, we revisited and were captivated by the beauty of Thorvaldsen's work. Spend at least 2 to 3 hours here. Enjoy not just his own work but the vast number of artefacts he collected and gave to the nation.

The design of the museum interacts so well with the exhibits, since it was built specifically to house Thorvaldsens art. It is a very impressive building home to stunning sculptures. I went about an hour before closing and it was very quiet

We didn't know much about this artist or Sean Scull's installation at the museum (until 5.3.2023 I believe), but the quantity of sculptures was amazing, capturing so many aspects of mythology and early Greek, Etruscan and other Roman antiquities. His sculptures of Christ and the Apostles for the Copenhagen Cathedral were truly amazing works. We were impressed by both the quality and quantity of his art.

Your enjoyment will depend on how much you like Thorvaldsens' sculptures, as that is the what the entire museum is about.
A good collection of sculptures, but Thorvaldsens' best work is in the Church of Our Lady, which is free to visit. The colossal sculptures in the great hall are the main attraction. It is right next to Christianborg Palace, so you can combine it with a visit there. Also a place to visit on one of Copenhagen's many rainy days.

We have visited many museums and this was our worst experience. From the gentlemen at the front desk to the workers in the hallways they were incredibly unwelcoming and unfriendly acting like we were bothering them by being there. The place was unkept and there were boxes and heaps of garbage here and there. Ignoring the unfriendly environment we tried to look around however there was no available audio guide nor signs in the walls or next to items to explain the displays and their significance. It was just a bunch of statues like you might see in a garden centre for your yard. Total waste of time.

I left visiting this Museum until my last day in Copenhagen as I had thought this rather dull looking place wouldn't hold much interest. How wrong I was!
Thorvaldsen is considered to have been one of Denmarks best sculptors and nearly all of his works are housed here. Even some of his possessions, books etc are also found in the place.
The Museum is easy to get around, all the exhibits are displayed in individual superbly decorated rooms and the sculptures and exhibits themselves are stunning. Many of them relate to Greek mythology and most rooms give details of the story behind the sculpture or reliefs within the room.
At present (August 2005), there are a row of winged chairs in the entrance hall in which you can sit and listen to various stories by Hans Christian Andersen.
I rarely give an "excellent" when writing any type of review on TripAdvisor, but in my opinion, in this case, it is justified.

The museum owns the original paster versions of Thorvaldsen's famous statues.
Maximillian elector of Bavaria equestian statue.
And Stanislaw Poniatowsky. The germans blew up the equestian statue in Warzaw during WW2, a new copy was made from this original and presented to Poland afterwards.
And the pope who was present at Napoleons coronation.

The museum is dedicated to the works of famous Danish sculptor, Bertel Thorvaldsen. There is a lot more than sculptures. Wander through the several chambers on the upper level.

Upto 40 years of his life was spent in Rome. The exterior of the building especially at the rear displays a painting of a boat supposedly transporting all his lifes work and collections to Denmark and the building within. It was all gifted to the City of Copenhagen, the Town Hall being located on Norregade in those days near Sankt Petri (Peter's).
The room's upstairs have allegedly never been disturbed perhaps only to have loaned out a paining or something to an exhibition. A catolgue from 1961 lists the Fanny Caspers painting in Room XXXII but just try and find Rooms XXXII and XXXI. Fanny Caspers is now in Room XXII but how true is this? Together 31 and 32 equal 63 but so does the F and C in a different way.
Jackie Kennedy reveived the idea for JFK to go to Dallas after sailing on a boat in Greece.
The museum is much more than a 1 or 2 hour visit. It is much, much bigger. Research first and then you'll be spending a far richer time when you next visit. I am sure all the museum staff will be upto speed and thrilled to help. Afterall there is an old tree outside the front looking into the 5 ..................

Is there a gift shop? I would be interested in buying a reproduction on a statue.
Written 17 June 2019
There is no gift shop though they sell a few things in a corridor. Mainly postcards of his most famous pieces. I did not see any copies for sale.
