This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

I had been here years ago and felt I didn't get to experience it. Tonight some colleagues and I decided to go and see if we could find a bar for a beer. We landed at Loppen and saw a live act, and it was pretty good! Bartenders are nice and they accept credit cards. As it was night, I... More

whilst we were advised by the hotel not to visit Christiana, we still went. Its a previous army base now run by what can only be described as current day hippies. They have their own rules and laws, and are very relaxed on cannabis being sold openly along " Pusher street" There are amazing murals on many of the buildings,... More

What a good place to be visited . A pure organic hippie commune. People are so peaceful and welcoming . A beautiful place of 84 acres . They are so vibrant and beautiful . Christiania have some rules which we have to follow as we respect the whole idea . If you are into green herb 🌿 this place is... More

We are a family of four adults. We were told to experience Christiania's quirkiness so had a nice walk around the area during the day. There's a beautiful lake and stage area which I'm sure are a great experience in the summer months. We went on a Sunday morning so there were a few stalls and cafes selling tea/coffee snacks... I thought this was going to be a place that would inspire people to be different but it was like looking at a festival ground after a festival... dirty, messy.. unkept.... this can be missed.. and sadly disappointed..

I spent several hours just walking around and taking in the inspiring atmosphere. There were green parks where people were playing guitar or smoking and having a good time. There were a few places to eat - including a lovely vegetarian restaurant. In some areas it felt a bit dingy, but generally I enjoyed admiring all the houses and the... More

There's nothing much here frankly, apart from some tatty stalls and dope shops. If you like watching people stoning away and think it's ever so cool buying marijuana openly, then come here. It was a nothing place, covered in graffiti and populated by rather boring people. There was simply nothing of interest to even vaguely tempt anyone to buy and... More

This is not a tourist attraction to "look for" this is a community full of wonderful people. If you are a tourist sure you are welcome but see it as a place to relax and wonder through, maybe sit by the water or take a seat and support the community by going into one of the cafes or buying the... Looking back, I don't know why I visited Christiania. I felt so out of place while walking the dusty, kinda creepy pathways. I did not feel unwelcomed, it was just not a place for me.

Surreal! We came across the Science and cocktails group and went in to listen to their lecture that evening, worth a visit if you like TED talks. Had dinner at Spiseloppen and wandered into a lovely craft shop, very high quality goods. It was probably the highlight of Copenhagen for us.

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
