This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

We had been told a lot about this area and that we should definitely visit it whilst in Copenhagen. We were disappointed with it. There was nothing that special about the area, some people smoking and selling drugs in an area full of unusual outdoor art and lots of graffiti. Not worth spending time there.

There wasn't much open at about 11am when we wondered round. It's definitely worth visiting and seemed friendly.

I'll come right out and say it, the first thing I did upon my arrival in Copenhagen was walk to Christiania because I knew I could buy weed there. There was nothing secretive about what was going on, all done out in the open. I had my choices of booths and I got what I came for, good quality and... More

I enjoyed the visit as someone who loves to check out the street arts, I was gutted to see as many good ones inside Christianna compared to outside of Christiana. It was interesting experience walking through solo, but certainly enjoying the garden where there's people drinking, you can the hygge feel once you've passed through the 'no camera' zone.

It is an unusual experience, a free town inside Copenhagen, very popular to buy stuff (so if you have kids and you are not open mind, it is better not to go there with them). There are many bars and independent shops, I bought a t-shirt in a store called The Essence. It is not allowed to take pictures in... More

we visited in Nov (took me a long time to write my reviews !), it was around 4pm, just going dusk, both myself and my husband consider ourselves creative and arty and were hoping to see some great christmas presents to take back to the UK, we just didn't get what all this was about, there were not that many... This is a very unusual and interesting place to walk around- derelict factory buildings have been taken over by independent shops which are great and there is lots of vibrant street art. Very different and very worthwhile!

Interesting little place that's different from the rest of the city. Visited in the day time and there were a lot of other people around so we did not feel unsafe. Theres not a lot to do here except for walk around and view the graffiti etc. A few little stalls and shops etc. Its definitely worth a visit. The... More

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
