The area
Neighbourhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

This a pleasant street with cafès by a canal - er, that's it. Nice enough but not worth going out of your way to see. On the opposite side of the canal there is a road and then the Christiansborg Palace complex.

This was a pretty place for a stroll despite the building site of the metro extension. There are nice shops and cafes as well as lovely views of the canal and Christiansborg palace.

Gammel Strand is a pretty, picturesque area with beautifully preserved 18th and 19th century houses, lovely shops, cafes, restaurants and an energetic vibe especially at night. This is a great place to stop for a drink, at one of the many outside cafes, while wandering around the city.

Gammel Strand is a street and public square next to Slotsholmens Canal. It used to be the site of a natural harbor.
Around this harbor, Copenhagen was founded as a small fishing and trading settlement in the 11th century.
Later this area became the site of a fish market, known for the women who would sit in the square to sell their fish.
Today it is a pleasant place to stroll along the canal.

The oldest part of Copenhagen. The street name means old beach. Here in medieval times the ships anchored up with their cargoes of fish opposite the old Copenhagen castle- where the Parliament building of Christiansborg stands today. Many fine buildings stand in this street including the old Assistenshus now housing the Ministry of Culture from 1793. Most of the other houses are from the 1790's.

Nice area to visit, plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. You can get on a boat from Gammel and do a canal tour, which we did, takes about 1 hour to get around the canal and really enjoyable. It was very cold so getting back to Gammel was great since you have a lot of choice regarding restaurants.
Certainly worth a visit.

We took a canal tour with our local friends, and our boat passed through this area. Very pretty with the houses lining the waterway. Very picturesque. It is also good to see this pretty area on foot.
